Using a tailored learning program for all abilities and expectations, and an unfailing growth mindset, a tutor should provide students with a love of learning that leads to internal fulfillment and a virtuous cycle where concepts are pursued willingly, and thus, more thoroughly. However, a tutor is not only a teacher, but a mentor; they should…

A tutor should be able to explain concepts in a manner which allows students to understand the concepts and apply it elsewhere. A tutor should assist students in understanding concepts on a deeper level, rather than just rote learning. Furthermore, a tutor should be passionate in what they teach. A teacher that is passionate about subjects will…

I value creating "WOW" moments for students. As stated previously, I find it extremely satisfying to witness that 'lightbulb' moment when students finally understand a hard area of the syllabus or how to answer a difficult question. I also think it is important that tutors stretch and challenge their students. This can be achieved by getting…

I believe the most important aspect is taking the time to understand what students are struggling with and helping them enjoy the process of learning and seeking feedback, rather than fearing it. I tailor my lessons to align with each student's interests and enjoy teaching in an engaging and enjoyable manner. I believe this approach provides…

The most important things a tutor can do for their student is make themselves alaways available to help their student, whether it is a full lesson or just a quick question over the phone, just being a constant support to the student is of such high value. Another important thing a tutor can do, is alter their teaching for each student. Everyone…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is concentrate on their needs. The student already has teachers at school who teach the class broadly, irrespective of a particular student's strength or weaknesses. A tutor must listen to what the student struggles with, and assist them with that area. A tutor can also be the most encouraging…

For smaller children, it is important that education is intesresting, entertaining to them, so the motivation for studying, learning content comes naturally and from their own. For older children, it is more important for tutors to reach out and ask the students what they don't understand or are not clear about. Targeting weak areas and fixing the…

There is a quote by William Butler Yeats that captures the essence of what I believe is crucial for a tutor: "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." This means that a tutor's role is not just to transfer information to the student, but to spark their curiosity and interest in learning. Therefore, the most important…

The most important thing a tutor can do is be encouraging and have faith in the student. Personally, when I used to have tutors, I performed the best when they reiterated, “you can do it! it’s not about the brain you were born with, it’s about how far you’re willing to go in terms of dedication and hard work,†and that stuck with me.…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student in my opinion is to give them guidance on how to be successful in the subject we tutor. At the end of the day we only see them once or twice a week. We can't teach them everything. So it is important that we guide them on how to learn and study in order to be successful. Myt strength lies…

I think the most important thing is to simply be there for a student, ensure their learning environment feels safe. From there on, explanations & clarifications make their entrance. I think the most important stuff a tutor can do is boost confidence to students. You have to make students believe they can tackle anything. I think my strengths as a tutor are…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to listen and create a safe space for the student. When tutors don't listen it'll be a waste of time for both parties. This can be very hard because sometimes students may not be able to pinpoint what they don't understand or they might just feel a bit embarrassed. This is where…

Facilitate the student's own learning by equipping them with the tools to then seek out how to learn and solve problems, and allowing the student to go where they want to go. The most important things that a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, are motivating the students to learn on their own as well as arming them with the tools and study skills. The motivation to learn is critical, since the tutor can teach the material, but at the end of the day, it is the student who has to master it. Without such…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are inspire and impart. An inspired student will feel much better about themselves and the subject and want to continue to work on it whilst imparted wisdom is what makes up the second half of a wholistic expereince. Easy to contact and arrange fist lesson. My sons tutor Teresa is reliable and has excellent communication skills and knowledge for year 11 and 12 extension math. My sons grades improved dramatically when we started tutoring and he now has good study habits and is able to review his work and confidently check his answers. Our experience has be excellent.
Michelle, Rose Bay

Inside Rose BayTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Lukas focused on finding the equation of a line, including determining gradients and y-intercepts, and practiced sketching parabolas by identifying turning points and intercepts.

Year 10 student tackled simultaneous equations as well as factorising quadratics using grouping and difference of squares strategies, working through targeted textbook problems.

For a primary school student in Year 4, recent sessions concentrated on fractions—covering addition, subtraction, multiplication and division—and converting between decimals and fractions with practical examples.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Mathematics, a student arrived unprepared for lessons and often forgot required materials, leading to missed opportunities for feedback on financial math practice. As one tutor observed, "he did not bring the past papers that I had previously given him."

Another Year 10 student showed signs of frustration when unsure how to approach multi-step worded problems—this led to avoidance of more challenging revision tasks and repeated confusion over which methods to use.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner's tendency to count out times tables instead of recalling them from memory slowed progress in fraction conversions, especially during timed activities.

Recent Achievements

One Rose Bay tutor noticed a Year 11 student who used to hesitate with trig problems now confidently writes out all his working for each question, even tackling non-right angled triangles on his own.

Another high schooler made a clear shift by arriving with all homework finished and identifying where he needed extra help, leading him to solve simultaneous equations independently after some guided practice.

In Year 5, a student who previously mixed up the order of months can now recite them without hesitation and completed multi-digit subtraction questions accurately in one sitting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Double Bay Central Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like McAuley Catholic Primary School.
