Show them that they are capable of the work and believe in them; often kids get discouraged from test scores but I think they just need to know that they are capable. I think a tutor can give them the confidence to assert their knowledge in their work and in the classroom then. As well as this, when they believe they are capable of the work, they…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to give them confidence in their abilities. Without confidence, a student may not be able to excel or perform tasks to the best of their abilities. Tutors act as an additional layer of support for students, and with their help, a good student can become a great one with the encouragement…

Alongside the expected imparting of understanding of knowledge to a student, I think a good tutor can change a student's attitude toward a subject. While not every student may learn to love a subject, there is always room to see it from another perspective and realise that may it isn't all that bad or unmasterable! I believe I have a talent for…

I believe one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is making the learning experience one that is fun, comfortable, safe, and enjoyable. I also believe being patient and understanding is an important characteristic in a tutor. I believe that students who comfortable in an educational setting are the ones that perform…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is build up their confidence and stop them from getting discouraged. I often find that if a student is having difficulties, they stop wanting to succeed in that subject. If you convince them that with a little bit of extra work they'll be doing really well, they often gain confidence…

A tutor should ensure that a student does not simply memorize material, but that they understand it. Understanding is not enough, however, and so I believe tutors should actively focus on allowing students to apply concepts that they have learned to consolidate their understanding and comprehension of the source material. It is important for…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student depends on the student. For some high-achieving students that are already confident this may mean better grades that allow them to follow a career path they've dreamed of, and for others the confidence a tutor can give them is more useful than any material they have learnt. To inspire and…

A tutor should always express appreciation and pride for improvements shown by the student- no matter how big or small the progress is. A tutor should also be able to point out the strengths and weaknesses of the student particularly in a respectful and encouraging way. Most importantly, building a rapport with the student is crucial so as to…

Another thing is to set goals and steps for a student to take in order to see and feel improvement. Local Reviews

It is only one week since we commenced Grade 6 maths tutoring but so far I have been extremely happy with the overall service, communication levels, speed of commencement and we now have a lovely tutor that I think my daughter will enjoy working with on a weekly basis.

Inside Coburg NorthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Sarah focused on phonics and common spelling words, practicing through reading exercises.

For Year 11, Michael worked on applying Newton's laws to cars with trailers involving friction, as well as inclined plane calculations using F=ma.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Alex explored electromagnetic fields—covering ratios, dot and cross products—and extended this into Lenz's and Faraday's laws by analyzing flux changes using diagrams.

Recent Challenges

In Year 12 Physics, Erin's exam and SAC performance has often been affected by time management and confidence when translating worded problems into equations—one session noted, "she wasn't fully able to answer a 3-mark written response about Air resistance…and seemed a little rattled."

Calculator entry errors have also recurred, with correct formulas but inaccurate final answers.

Earlier in the year, she occasionally arrived without worked homework questions due to organization lapses.

In contrast, a Year 4 student's work revealed frequent issues with handwriting clarity and layout when tackling Venn diagrams or reading comprehension tasks, making their reasoning difficult to follow during review.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Coburg North noticed a high school student who, after previously losing marks to small errors and timing issues on her SACs, now confidently explains her maths reasoning out loud and has started critiquing and defending her solutions—something she used to avoid.

Another older student recently took the lead in sessions by setting the agenda herself, bringing up integrals and wave problems she wanted help with, showing a new level of independence compared to waiting for guidance.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who once rushed through reading is now pausing to sound out words before moving on.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Preston Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Mercy College.
