What do I enjoy most about tutoring? 😁

As someone who didn't really like maths when I studied it in high school, and found a love for it at university (enough to become a maths major!), I value helping students enjoy maths, or at the very least stop hating it/feeling like they aren't a 'maths person'.

My Strengths as Tutor 💪

My experiences working and volunteering as a tutor and teaching assistant have helped me gain insight into how to instil students with a curiosity for maths and how to help motivate them to achieve their academic goals. My approach is to meet the student where they're at, and help them understand a concept or type of problem step-by-step, encouraging independent work and deeper understanding to promote future success in mathematics. And as someone who's studied maths at a tertiary level, I can relate to my students' struggles and help present information in a way that makes sense to them. I'm also open to feedback, and happy to adjust my approach to best suit the student and their family's best interests.

Most important things I can do for a student 🏅

I can help students feel confident in their ability to solve problems, reach their goals, and achieve success in their classes, by guiding them through practice problems while fostering independent thinking and understanding, alongside helping them develop their study skills. In terms of my teaching philosophy, I value relational understanding, which is understanding why things work, versus just memorizing formulas and when to apply them. Relational understanding leads to students being more likely to remember concepts long-term, and less likely to make conceptual mistakes. I think it’s also important to be friendly and encouraging, so students aren’t afraid to make mistakes or say they don’t understand something. As such, I foster a welcoming environment and work to put students at ease.
