What do I enjoy most about tutoring? π
Teaching has always evoked a great deal of satisfaction and fulfillment for me, a 'helper's high', so to speak. Especially the 'aha' moment when a student grasps a challenging concept. Another important aspect is that school life can be a perilous journey for some students (especially for students undergoing the HSC), and I believe that personalised tutoring, in many respects, fills that gap by acting as an anchor through the stresses of school obligations, as students are always aware that at their lowest lows, someone can pull them up to higher ground. From personal experience I especially struggled with focus and motivation through the HSC; having someone hold me accountable would have surely made things easier. So, as a tutor, I aim to fulfill the role of the proverbial lantern to light the way through the struggles of schoolβA support I would have appreciated in my own past experiences.
My Strengths as Tutor πͺ
My strengths as a tutor is that I have a good understanding of the thought processes of others and therefore can more effectively gauge the exact areas of misunderstanding, thereby informing the process of effectively communicating concepts to students. Additionally, I am proficient in communicating complex concepts to students by establishing basic fundemental principles and then gradually integrating such principles in a coherent and logical manner in order to explain a greater complex concept. However, my most effective strength as a tutor is my ability to empathise, not only on a pedagogical level, but a personal level, that has the benefit of approaching student troubles beyond misunderstandings related to learning, such as a lack of motivation, focus, drive etc.
Most important things I can do for a student π
The most important thing I can do for a student is to be patient. Patience is key in facilitating the process of learning as it removes the anxiety inducing pressure of expectation and allows the student to solely focus on the content at hand. Patience also allows the student to rationalise concepts at their own pace. This has the effect of deeply embedding concepts and strengthening understanding. Teachers are merely a guide that 'coax' the mind of a student to think in a certain way, and the thinking that occurs within the mind of the student is where learning and understanding occurs; patience is what allows that process to flourish.
