I would consider skills such as organisation, critical thinking and problem solving strategies to be the most valuable takeaways for the student, especially since the skills will always be useful long-term. I also think an english tutor should be able to build up their student's growth mindset, giving the students the mentality and confidence to…

I believe the most important thing an english tutor can do for a student is not just help them academically, but be there for them emotionally, helping them to understand themselves and giving them the resources to learn lifelong skills that they will carry into their work life and future. My strengths are that I am an active listener, patient,…

I think the most important thing for an english tutor is the ability to allow the student to improve exponentially whilst enjoying what they are learning, because from my experience, once I have understood and learnt a concept, applying and solving problems become much easier and fun in a way. I believe not only providing answers, but instead…

This means adopting a personalised approach to tutoring wherein the tutor employs teaching methods and materials that are best suited to the individual child. This helps the child to feel understood and…

I believe that an english tutor should always encourage their students to try. I think at school a lot of the time a subject or a topic might seem very scary to the student and for this reason it becomes very hard for them to start studying the subject, So, I think as a tutor the most important part of my role is to show my students that there is…

Understanding the student needs is paramount for building a great student-tutor relationship. Sometimes, students can find it difficult to focus or concentrate in class and I think as an english tutor, I must be able to understand why the student is feeling such way. I've seen tutors who would get angry at students, just because they were…

Furthermore, I think it is important to teach students how to learn and study so that they can keep learning and…

There is a quote by William Butler Yeats that captures the essence of what I believe is crucial for an english tutor: "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." This means that a tutor's role is not just to transfer information to the student, but to spark their curiosity and interest in learning. Therefore, the most…

Firstly, I would create a safe environment, every student is capable of learning (no one is stupid), I think this safe space allows students to ask questions which promotes confidence in tackling harder problems. Secondly, patience. A tutor needs to be patient because not every student understand certain concepts as quickly as others. Finally,…

Every student has unique strengths, weaknesses, and learning styles, and it's important for a tutor to understand these individual differences and tailor their approach accordingly. We were very happy with the tutoring from Jennifer.

Inside KensingtonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Olivia worked on mean, median and mode calculations as well as interpreting graphs.

In Year 10, Ethan practised non-right angled trigonometry using the sine rule and cosine rule.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Liam focused on basic trigonometry and explored normal distribution, including understanding its key properties and uses.

Recent Challenges

A Year 7 student often worked out maths in their head instead of writing steps, which made it harder to spot where misunderstandings with algebra or negative signs occurred—he skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors.

In Year 11 Physics, a student froze when unsure how to start a question and needed guidance breaking down what was being asked; missing definitions slowed progress.

A senior Chemistry student relied heavily on checking notes for formulas rather than recalling them independently, leading to lost time during problem-solving.

Nerves in impromptu speeches (Year 10 English) led to rushed delivery and forgotten structure.

Recent Achievements

One Kensington tutor noted a high school student who previously hesitated to speak up now talks through his problem-solving process out loud and actively asks questions when stuck, rather than staying quiet.

Another secondary student showed new independence by checking over each maths problem and explaining their reasoning step-by-step—something he'd avoided before.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner, after struggling with fractions last term, has started converting mixed numbers independently and can now solve most ratio problems solo.

Last week, one completed all ten practice questions without needing any hints from the tutor.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Randwick Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Coogee Boys' Preparatory School.
