Firstly, being kind, patient and listening to the student matters the most. This is because not everyone is the same, not everyone has the same capacity to understand and grasp the concept. One student may understand it in a minute, whereas another may take 10. So its very important that the tutor is kind, patient and listens to the student.…

My English teachers in my final years of school showed me that putting trust in students and adapting to their individual needs is one of the best ways to help them improve. It is crucial to help the students gain true confidence in their subjects through this way, as it can act as a source of motivation and a reason to keep persisting. I also…

An important thing of being a tutor is to support the student the best you can and working with them rather than having the student follow your style. I also think it’s important to listen and to understand where they’re struggling and to adapt my approach so learning feels achievable and positive. I think my strengths include patience, clear…

A tutor should understand the student's ability and capacity of learning. Then the tutor should teach the student in a particular way to make him understand the lesson in his unique way. I think i'm empathetic, honest and enthusiastic as a tutor. I have a good listening ability. I encourages independence in student so that they do not rely on the…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is understand that each student is different and learns best in different ways and at different paces. I also firmly believe that engaging the student by doing things like connecting concepts to the real world or even to the student's own interests is paramount for the overall retention…

A tutor that is able to put the students need in front or before his own is the most important thing. This is what builds and creates trust between the tutor and the student that no matter what the tutor will have the students back. It is just so important that nothing else can come above that. My motivation and dedication towards teaching and…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is foster independent thinking and understanding. At the end of the day, there is a big difference in simply knowing a concept and truly understanding it. The goal should be to guide students towards a level of comprehension where they can think critically and confidently approach questions with a…

Be there for the student when they need help, and never losing patience with them. Students need reassurance that they will always have someone to help them no matter how 'silly' they think their questions are and won't be judged. A tutor should support the student best they can and provide them with resources to help along the way, also making…

Pass on knowledge about how to become self-sufficient and break down work so that it's less overwhelming. A tutor can provide a proper guideline to a student on how to excel in his/her studies. The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to have patience, be willing to take feedback as a tutor, and put the most effort in helping a child get most out of their learning. Often when working with kids of a young age, they can get frustrated quickly if they don't understand something, so it is important to be able to quickly calm…

Inside Guys HillTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Meeka worked on multiplication and division with tens, as well as using BIDMAS to order equations and solve worded problems.

In Year 10, Max tackled constant acceleration using SUVAT equations, exploring motion vs. time graphs to interpret real-world scenarios.

For Year 11, Olivia focused on discrete and binomial probability, applying these concepts through targeted practice questions to solidify her understanding of probability distributions.

Recent Challenges

In VCE Maths, one student became preoccupied with finishing exams quickly and "didn't use CAS efficiently," leading to incomplete solutions in time-limited settings. This anxiety about timing also caused skipped checks on transformation questions—past mistakes reappeared.

In Year 8 Physics, a student's notes show difficulty organizing displacement and velocity graphs from scenarios; messy working slowed progress and hid small errors.

For a Year 3 learner, skipping homework on number lines made later subtraction tasks more confusing ("she needed the number line for subtraction but hadn't practiced at home"). The moment of realization was visible when she hesitated at each jump.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Guys Hill recently noticed some encouraging shifts among students. One Year 11 student who had struggled with binomial distribution last term now works through related exam questions with much less hesitation, often setting up equations independently.

In a middle school session, a student who used to quietly guess at division problems has begun asking clarifying questions instead of staying stuck—she even finished her worksheet without any help this week.

Meanwhile, one Year 12 learner tackled torque and force diagram questions that were previously overwhelming, managing to draw out the diagrams accurately on her own for the first time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Bunjil Place Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Berwick Secondary College.
