Make a comfortable vibe for the students when you teach them. If the students feel comfortable to study with you and help them get interested in the subject, it will be easier for you to assist students in achieving their learning goals. And I believe that helping them make small improvements day by day is the most important thing a chemistry…

Besides helping the student with their academic workload, I believe that being someone the student can confide in is important for a chemistry tutor especially in a 1-1 setting. At the end of the day, a tutor who can listen to their student will make it easier for both parties to cooperate and make the student feel more at ease as their worries…

If the student is able to walk away from a session being able to understand the concept and feel interested and confident with it, they not only will gain better results in exams but will have a better idea of the subject as…

Provide adequate motivation and encouragement. A tutor is only half responsible for the student's progress, and the student is responsible for the other half through their own work and perseverance. It is therefore crucial that a chemistry tutor teaches not only content, but also good work ethic to a student by encouraging and motivating them to…

Aside from teaching the content in an understandable and logical manner, I also think that a chemistry tutor should try to inspire a student to become a self-directed and motivated learner. Soheil is a fantastic help to our son Jack. They are currently working together on year 11 specialist maths which Jack has been terrified of. With Soheil's assistance Jack is able to progress through the challenging content with relative ease. Soheil assigns Jack with manageable homework assignments to consolidate knowledge of any new content and he also provides extra relevant tests and exercises to test Jack's competency.

Inside GavenTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student India worked on addition using vertical form, telling time on analogue clocks, and building confidence with multiplication tables up to six.

Year 9 student Elahe focused on algebraic manipulation, especially isolating variables and solving simultaneous equations using both elimination and substitution methods, as well as exploring Pythagoras' theorem and trigonometric ratios for finding side lengths.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Lisa reviewed key biology concepts like biodiversity through calculating Simpson's Diversity Index and practiced structuring extended written responses for her assignments.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 algebra, one student often left homework incomplete and rarely revisited feedback, which led to persistent errors in graph interpretation—"she had some errors with interpretation," noted a tutor.

In Year 11 biology, referencing issues appeared when working on research assignments; confirming sources with the teacher was repeatedly necessary.

For a Year 7 maths student, messy data graphing and formatting made results difficult to follow during workbook checks.

Meanwhile, a primary learner struggled to start subtraction problems independently, freezing until prompted. This hesitation slowed practice and built frustration when faced with unfamiliar questions.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Gaven recently noticed Lisa, a Year 10 student, starting to review assignment feedback before sessions and making edits independently—previously she waited for step-by-step help.

In Year 8 maths, Jade made a clear leap by working through the area of triangles and circles after struggling at first; by lesson's end, she could solve these without prompts.

Meanwhile, India in Year 3 has begun using vertical addition on her own during games—just weeks ago she needed reminders each time.

Last session, Lisa also investigated biology questions herself when unsure instead of waiting for guidance.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Helensvale Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Pacific Pines State High School.
