Firstly, I believe developing a strong relationship with a student is one of the most important things a student can do. This shows trust and allows students to give their full potential during sessions. Another important part of tutoring is to have a clear and well designed plan for the session ahead, which makes both the student and tutor have a…

To ensure that the student actually learns something that is useful, and understands how to do the question, so they can complete the questions by themselves without help. I think my strengths are patience to allow someone time to understand, being clear on how to do something and my very high math…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is making sure they have enough confidence and belief in themselves to replicate the work you do together, by themselves. This in the end is the most beneficial skill when it comes to school, because self doubt holds back so many students. Being able to break down concepts into bite…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, foster a positive learning environment, and encourage independent thinking. A tutor should make students feel supported and motivated, showing them that mistakes are part of the learning process. By adapting to each student's unique needs and learning style, a…

I belive helping to build confidence is the most important thing a tutor can do for a student. Confidence in one area can flow into other areas of study/life. A positive and supportive tutor can have influence on a students life in future years of study and life. Patience, understanding, positive attitude, growth mindset, dynamic. Understanding…

The most important things that a tutor can do for a student are to increase their confidence in the subject, provide a solid base of understanding rather than just rote learning, try and dispel existing doubts and encourage a sense of discovery. I am an empathetic person and can relate to children feeling lost in some aspects of their learning.…

I would incorporate connection to the students field of interest by listening to them identifying their weakness and help them without judging them. Build their confidence by motivating them and assuring that they can do it. Patience- students have different learning abilities. Creativity- intend to incorporate different teaching methods.…

Like I briefly mentioned earlier, I think it is important to look at being a mentor rather than a teacher. It is a far more personal and direct experience working with one or maybe a few students at a time rather than an entire classroom, so it is vital to establish actual relationships with your students and ensure that they can apply the work…

Throughout my tertiary studies, I have found that the key to learning anything is finding the point of interest for a person and developing that area so that the subject as a whole becomes enjoyable. For any student, progress will naturally vary and giving them that support and encouragement to persevere and overcome hurdles in their learning is,…

I think the most important thing for a tutor should be to work with the student, so that they can work independently. This is by teaching them the basics of a subject but also teaching them effective ways to study and learn so they are not reliant on the tutor. I think my strengths are as a tutor is I just recently completed year 12 a few months…

Be patient. I believe undermining a students effort is the worst thing that could be done, not just from a tutor but from any significant figure in a students life. A tutor must be patient irregardless if a student isn't following the lesson plan how they would like, and the tutor should tailor it accordingly to their needs. I pay close attention…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to listen. A tutor's job is not to just teach the student, but to bring out the best of the student and a tutor cannot do that unless they listen to the student. A good tutor is not a tutor that had achieved exceedingly well themselves, although that is a part of it- it's about their ability…

Tom was absolutely amazing. He was able to create a great connection with Grace immediately. It was the first time I’ve seen her smile while doing math! He really provided some achievable challenges and she is actually excited for her next session.

Inside Croydon NorthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Sara worked through a data collection project for school and practiced interpreting frequency tables, while also revising how to add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators.

Year 9 student Josh focused on trigonometry, including applying bearings to problems and revising for an upcoming test by solving practice questions.

For Year 10, Codi reviewed circular functions in preparation for exams and tackled context-based applications of stationary points using worked examples.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Methods, one student's tendency to rely on memorised rules rather than genuine understanding led to confusion with stationary points—"we'll need to consider what stationary point really means and its purpose."

Another, in Year 10, was hesitant to ask for help when stuck, sometimes remaining silent even when unsure.

In Year 7 algebra, forgetting to show working meant marks were lost in tests; "he often forgets to show his working out," noted a tutor.

Meanwhile, a primary student's avoidance of multiplication practice due to nerves made basic calculations slower during problem-solving sessions.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Croydon North noticed that Josh, a high school student, is now regularly double-checking his own maths work—something he didn't do before—which means he's catching and correcting small mistakes independently.

Another recent session saw Ayelet confidently simplifying surds and using index laws with much less reliance on her calculator; she now talks through each step out loud, making her reasoning clear.

Meanwhile, Sara (primary) has started tackling addition problems entirely in her head instead of reaching for a calculator or counting on her fingers, and she self-checks answers before moving on.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mooroolbark Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Village School.
