I had the student do some homework questions that she had not been able to complete. We looked at different examples and I got the student to work out which of the two techniques would be best to use. The student worked through some examples where she had to convert written statements into simultaneous equations and solve for these.

Student needs to reinforce arithmetic operations, especially when using unknown variables, to simplify equations. She is a bright student but is lacking some confidence in her answers and working. I provided positive feedback on the student's working of homework questions and further confidence boosting will greatly assist in improving grades.

Notebook and workbook are well-organised. Formatting is good, with equations developed line by line to simplify equations and solve.

Care needs to be taken when rewriting equations line by line to avoid errors such as writing down the wrong coefficient value. Student needs to remember that a number written outside a term inside brackets multiplies each of those terms. Need to avoid using addition instead of multiplication in these cases. To check solutions to simultaneous equations when answers are not available, student should practice substituting answers found back into equations to ensure these are correct. For Pythagoras and trigonometry student should practice examples to identify whether to use the Pythagoras equation or trigonometric values such as tan, cos and sin.

The student felt confident in how the SAC had gone. He was able to complete all questions and did not identify any particular questions of concern. The student was able to start some past exam questions and used pen and paper to identify key data and parts of the question. We agreed on the usefulness of a checklist of difficult questions or topics needing extra revision.

The student sometimes does not show written steps that can help to indicate a complete understanding of some material. Some online reports of past exams show that the examiners are looking for an indication of this in the written response questions so we will work further on pen and paper technique that will both demonstrate understanding and seek to minimise transcription errors and mistakes such as incorrect time periods for financial mathematics questions.

I had the student look at how to approach each question, including listing the information provided, and determining the steps required to determine a solution. We were able to do a good practice of interest calculations using both an amortisation table and using finance solver, as well as looking in detail at relative amounts of interest and principal reductions during the course of a loan. We also continued our revision from our previous tutorial of critical path calculations, and I reinforced with the student the need to label activity durations on activity network charts to ensure that earliest and latest start times were accurately recorded.

Practice questions need to be done on a consistent basis to both reinforce understanding of the topics, to ensure that the correct formulae and procedures are used and to minimise errors in calculations.
