Make them feel grounded and comfortable in their present studies so that they may be prepared for the studies in future. This comes in tandem with teaching a guise of humility and realism of the student and their future endeavours. Humorous, empathetic, patient and the ability to apply a unique perspective if necessary. These qualities make it…

In my opinion, the best thing a tutor can do for a student is to make the student capable of explaining the concepts to another person. Explaining the correct concepts the right way is the key to make the basics and fundamentals to remain in the student's mind. As a tutor, my strengths lie in my ability to break down complex concepts into easily…

I consider active listening and patience most important because if you don't have those, the student will get discouraged and you won't be able to help them fully. The student's needs always come first. My strengths are that I'm kind, compassionate, patient and I listen to the student and make sure I understand what they're having difficulties…

A tutor is beyond someone that can just teach some topics to students, but they are someone that the student looks upto, and feels comfortable sharing their weaknesses to. It is essential for for the tutor to understand the child’s needs, and cater to those specifically. My strengths are that i have recently graduated high school, so I am very…

Connect the dots from where they are to where they want to be. Take the life's insecurities out of them by make them focus on their end goal. Make education as a bridge to get there. Some students cant really focus on education due to family issues or personal. Remind them that it does not matter what are their histories, choices are everything.…

I think one of the most important things a tutor can do is help a student build confidence. A lot of the time, students know more than they think they just need someone to guide them, encourage them, and help them see their own progress. It’s also really important to create a safe, supportive space where they feel comfortable asking questions…

I consider the time and space a tutor gives to the student the most important thing. It is all about what they, as the student, are comfortable with. However, this does not stop another important aspect; pushing a student through their limits in order to achieve their goals. These are the most important things a tutor can do for a student. I…

Local Reviews

Mary Lynch has been a fantastic help to my daughter this year. She is enthusiastic, obviously loves what she does, and explains things clearly and patiently. She is encouraging and supportive, building both knowledge and confidence. She goes over and above and really cares about her students success. My daughter's performance and confidence in maths has increased with Mary's tutoring. Her exam mark in semester two was 75% compared to 56% in semester 1. We are very grateful for Mary's support and instruction this year - she is an amazing tutor and a lovely person.

Inside WhitemanTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student Wani worked through advanced index laws and scientific notation, as well as preparing for a test on surface area using real textbook questions.

In Year 11, Dylan reviewed normal distribution and statistics for an upcoming exam, focusing on interpreting graphs and applying statistical calculations to sample problems.

Meanwhile, Aaron in Year 12 practiced combination problems and completed a calculator-free past exam paper section covering a mix of algebraic methods and probability.

Recent Challenges

In Year 3 maths, one student often guessed answers to multi-digit multiplication and division rather than writing out their working; as noted, "she likes to guess the answers more than she wants to actually solve it," which meant missed learning opportunities.

A Year 7 student was impulsive with Roman Numerals and subtraction, skipping backchecking—so small errors lingered uncorrected.

In Year 12 Maths Methods, another did not bring required materials ("needs to get his Sadler Book 1 for preparing the exam"), limiting exam practice.

For senior students, algebra revision sometimes focused only on familiar problems instead of harder textbook or trial test sets.

Recent Achievements

One Whiteman tutor noticed a real shift in a Year 10 student who now brings their own practice problems to sessions, leading to quicker problem-solving and genuine engagement—something they previously hesitated to do.

A high schooler recently demonstrated new independence by preparing physics questions in advance and finishing an entire problem set during the session, a marked change from needing more direction before.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 student who used to rush is now carefully backchecking her answers on addition and subtraction tasks without reminders and has started explaining her reasoning aloud when tackling division patterns.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Ballajura Public Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like South Ballajura Primary School.
