What do I enjoy most about tutoring? 😁
I am currently studying a double degree B of Econs with B of Education (Secondary) at the University of Adelaide. I would love to get myself into education sector and gain more teaching and tutoring experience from the challenges. I believe that tutoring offers me opportunity to check my own knowledge and learn from others.
My Strengths as Tutor 💪
- My distinction GPA (>80%) at the University of Adelaide (Receiver of the Ray Lewis Memorial price from the Shcool of Economics; Certificate of Academic Excellence in Mathematical Economics) and band 5-6 of academic achievement at my high school (Some maths related prizes: First prize in 2017 and second prize in 2019 international Youth Innovation Design Competition (Architectural structure design with Mathematics
application) ; Certificate of proficiency in 2017 and 2018 Australian Mathematics Competition.)
- My bilingual communication skill, both Chinese (Cantonese, Mandarin) and English.
- In 2020, I have my placement experience at St Peter’s private college in Adelaide. I have taken some of the year 9, 11,12 Economics classes. I have familarised myself with South Australian education systems and curriculums and actively applied my teaching strategies into my teaching. I got excellent feedback from the college and my mentor teacher. This teaching experience advances my overall professionalism.
- My experience in different education systems and syllabuses, as I studied my high school in Sydney.
- Well organization skills and be able to give clear instructions and explanations.
- Good listener and fast learner, I am good at listening to my students and learning from each other. Listening is one of the best teaching strategies to establish a good learning environment and relationship with students and makes the tutorial more effective to students.
- Using different types of teaching strategies, e.g. ICT literacies/ integration of technologies, gamification.
- Enthusiastic and positive personality.
Most important things I can do for a student 🏅
Improving their overall problem-solving and critical thinking skill, guiding them to be a successful and individual learner while establishing a positive learning environment and relationship between tutor and students. The most important part is to let them achieve their short-term goals and then long-term goals.

It is great to hear the quadratic equation test result from Ariana. Top band 70/74 proves she now has an excellent understanding toward quadratic questions. And I’m glad that she now can explain every steps and process while solving maths questions. Accurate, logical and concise. She is engaging with each topic and willing to improve and get a further and deeper understanding towards the application and problem solving of the contents.
Everything is on track. More practices on problem solving and explore her own method to get to the answer quicker and more accurate.

Ariana is on track with her study. She has consolidated the knowledge of contents and enjoyed working on those questions. She learnt and memorised all the skills for solving quadratic equations, as to eliminate the confusion of completing the square. She now could solve quadratic equations independently and know the proper way/"formulas" of solving real-life questions by correctly identifying the relationship of the variables and breaking down the known information from the questions. She worked hard to memorise and make further progress with completing the square. Also, she learnt to observe and determine the corresponding methods of solving different forms of quadratic equations before she started, in this way, to get a 100% accuracy. We went through the practice test, she has familiarised herself with the contents that will be covered in the test and improved skills on those content areas by doing allocated question practices.
Needs to improve on the accuracy and efficiency of solving quadratic equations as this will be achieved by doing more practice and do things in mind automatically after encountering all different forms of quadratic equations. -Be careful with the steps of completing the square. e.g. Always be aware of the coefficients, adding brackets and signs. -It is intelligent to do things in head, but also we can simply make a mistake by not showing steps (Sometime lose progress marks as well). Mistakes are barely detected and noticed when you go back and check, so it is better to write thinking process on the paper so we can track it back and correct the answers once we make mistakes.

Ariana had finished all the tutoring homework from last week and enable to complete the square individually. She is well on track with the school work after the tutorial by improving the overall understanding of parabola graphing and eliminating the graphing confusion. Also, she paid full attention and followed the instruction in the learning process. She shown her passion for improving maths skill. It is good to hear her feedback about her interest in learning different approaches to solve a same Maths question. By working out the answers in different/innovated ways can definitely motivate her interest in Maths and gain a deeper understanding of the concepts. Try thinking 'out of the box' and be creative in solving same kinds of quadratic equations can give her an insight of the content.
This lesson is bit rushed as these contents are the fundamental knowledge for constructing understanding of the whole parabola topic. Longer session is recommended for students to have time to process, practise, consolidate and summarise knowledge, thus allow them to create a clear mind-map in their cognitive system.

Ariana is an active learner and listener, she accepted challenging questions and worked hard on solving them and memorising the working methods. She has paid 100% attention to the tuition and followed instructions. I can see she enjoyed the lesson and maths (this is the most important thing!!), and she is so nice to work with. She has been able to deal with difficulties in learning new concept and consolidate old contents. She is hard-working and dedicated to the conversation and actively using provided strategies to work on the maths questions and get further improvement during the lesson.
Student needs to remember bringing all the materials for the tuition, including textbook, calculator etc.
