I believe that tutors must have a good attitude and genuinely enjoy the concepts and the subject. Without this, the student will most likely find the tutoring bland and boring, which would reduce their engagement and their overall performance and knowledge in the subject. My experience as a tennis coach has shown me how different students learn at…

Building trust creates a safe environment for active engagement. Understanding the student's…

In my opinion, the most important thing a tutor can do for students is making sure that the student completely understands the concept and does not try to rote learn it. I believe that a tutor is a person who can change the point of view of a student through which they can grasp the concept well and improves their understanding ability. I own…

Modern curriculum is mostly based on a thought process that works for most students. But not for all, and school teachers don't usually have the capacity to take care of all the students individually. That's where a tutor can help. Everybody thinks about and understand scientific ideas and theories in their own, personal way. A tutor can lead the…

Be a safe space where the client isn’t afraid to make mistakes, because you don’t learn without making mistakes. I understand that everyone learns differently, so my biggest strength is that I am able to work with my client and get to know their learning style so I can help them learn in the best way that suits…

The tutor must be supportive of their work and problems as well where students can feel comfortable around you in expressing their opinions and with their own work. A tutor must be engaging from the moment they first meet the student, to how they deliver the tutoring, to the last second that they leave each tutoring session. A tutor must also be…

One of the most important things a tutor can do is help students develop habits that focus on truly understanding how concepts and topics work, rather than just memorising methods. When students start to see the "why" behind the maths, it often sparks a sense of enjoyment and fulfilment that makes learning more meaningful. This deeper…

To encourage and make the students believe in themselves. Some students who are not doing well in Maths feel that they do not have the aptitude for the subject. We, as the tutor, have to identify the areas that they need improvement, teach and build their foundation from there. When they experience small success, their motivation for learning…

A tutor MUST make the student comfortable with their learning by building a friendship with them, so that they always want to return to EZY Math Tutoring. A tutor must also put aside everything else in their life to assist the student: even if I have a bad day I cannot let that lessen my performance while teaching the student. Finally, a tutor…

As a tutor it is crucial to deeply understand the ambitions and goals of each student; their current level, and where they want to end up or what they want to achieve. This helps the tutor and student to create realistic but valuable goals, and underlying expectations throughout the experience. I think that as a tutor, I have strengths in truly…

1. A tutor can shape how a student thinks about a particular topic/subject. If while teaching something the tutor himself/herself is not interested then the student will be less likely to pay 100% attention 2. A tutor can empower the student to learn better and at their own pace. Just letting the student know that it is okay if you take more time…

Confidence is the most important thing a tutor can bring to a student struggling with English. Knowledge and new skills can be taught to anyone, but a tutor should be able to instil a confidence within student so they can bring these skills into their learning but also into their everyday life. This is achieved by building relationships with…

Our modern world is built around education and every student can expect to experience a lot of it in the future. Therefore, it is most important that a tutor should model genuine interest in learning (both the subject matter and how to learn well), so that the student him/herself enjoys the process and is encouraged to become a lifelong learner.…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is reassure them that it is perfectly normal to not understand a topic straight away. Tutors must make sure that students are not ashamed of needing help, and do not feel 'stupid' or 'dumb' for not understanding. I am a very patient person who is good at listening. When I am in a tutoring role…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach them how to teach themselves. Instead of spoon-feeding students the answers to specific questions, a good tutor helps students understand how to think to devise a solution for any problem they encounter. The most important thing a tutor can do to a student is make student believe that student can learn and reach proper solution. I can only be satisfied and feel peaceful once I…

Inside Seaview DownsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Thomas worked on mastering the rules for algebraic equations—ensuring what is done to one side is mirrored on the other—and revised how to add and multiply fractions, focusing on foundational skills needed for future topics.

Year 10 student clarified the requirements of a calculus assignment by reviewing the quadratic formula for solving equations and then practiced basic surd and logarithm rules in preparation for an upcoming test.

Meanwhile, a Year 9 session involved practicing exponent laws, including multiplying and dividing exponents with the same base and simplifying more complex expressions using these rules.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 algebra, skipping steps in working meant small sign errors went unnoticed—"he skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors," as a tutor observed.

In Year 12 calculus and physics, Thomas often struggled to recall the correct formula under pressure, leading to hesitation during multi-step problems; messy notes and unclear cheat sheets slowed revision before tests.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student lost focus during subtraction tasks when distracted by nearby activity, leaving answers incomplete.

In several senior sessions, forgetting notebooks or not reviewing feedback made it harder to spot recurring mistakes on practice exams.

Recent Achievements

A Seaview Downs tutor noticed a big shift in one Year 11 student who, after struggling with calculus rules, started using sign diagrams independently to solve minimum and maximum problems—something he'd previously avoided without step-by-step help.

In Year 9, Stephen recently began checking his answers for mistakes instead of rushing through practice tests, showing more care and accuracy than before.

Meanwhile, Jye (Year 4) surprised his tutor by reading aloud a narrative text smoothly and using word attack skills to decode new words—where just weeks ago he hesitated when facing tricky vocabulary.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Cultural Centre Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Seaview Downs Primary School.
