The most important thing a physics tutor can do for a student is give them the confidence to tackle questions by themselves. This is done by not doing the questions for the students, rather assisting their attempt at the questions, giving insight into what your approach would look like. My strengths as a tutor include: my ability to take an…

I think the best thing a physics tutor can do is make learning feel achievable. A big part of that is adapting to how each student learns, breaking things down in a way that makes sense to them, and giving them the confidence to tackle challenges on their own. Tutoring isn't just about getting through the syllabus, it's about showing students how…

Allow the student to discover rather than memorise - I understand that subjects such as Maths can feel overwhelming if given as rote learning. Instead, allowing the students to discover the content for themselves not only helps with retaining information, but can make learning fun! Build the student's confidence - There is no "stupid answer",…

Relatability is so important. We see a huge disconnect between teachers/tutors and students. I believe that an equal playing field with mutual respect creates a unique learning environment and nurtures encouragement. The student can see how the teacher got to where they are, and can realise that they, too, can learn these concepts just as those…

Since the tutor acts as a role model for the student, the most important thing a physics tutor can do is to take this opportunity to act as a mentor. By taking this role on board, the dynamic increases and the tutor can effectively teach. My greatest strength is patience and empathy. I have noticed the smartest tutors are not the best tutors. As a physics tutor, it is your obligation to teach in a way that your pupil develops a passion for the topic he is learning. There is nothing worst than somebody who is bored while learning. Focusing on deeply understanding and on practical application is key to awaken a desire to continue learning. "If you can't explain it to a six year old, you…

I have a very applied way to understand…

Being able to formulate different approaches on the go is something a physics tutor should be able to do in order for the students to understand at their own pace. A tutor should also be patient in order to make the student feel welcomed whenever they are in a predicament academically. Other than that, a tutor should be friendly so the students…

I believe a physics tutor can make all the difference to a student struggling with their studies. School teaching can often be mechanical and impersonal; an environment where some students find it difficult to learn. I know first hand that teaching in smaller groups or one-on-one works is much more effective at learning hard to grasp concepts. The…

Easy to contact and arrange fist lesson. My sons tutor Teresa is reliable and has excellent communication skills and knowledge for year 11 and 12 extension math. My sons grades improved dramatically when we started tutoring and he now has good study habits and is able to review his work and confidently check his answers. Our experience has be excellent.

Inside Rose BayTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Lukas focused on finding the equation of a line, including determining gradients and y-intercepts, and practiced sketching parabolas by identifying turning points and intercepts.

Year 10 student tackled simultaneous equations as well as factorising quadratics using grouping and difference of squares strategies, working through targeted textbook problems.

For a primary school student in Year 4, recent sessions concentrated on fractions—covering addition, subtraction, multiplication and division—and converting between decimals and fractions with practical examples.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Mathematics, a student arrived unprepared for lessons and often forgot required materials, leading to missed opportunities for feedback on financial math practice. As one tutor observed, "he did not bring the past papers that I had previously given him."

Another Year 10 student showed signs of frustration when unsure how to approach multi-step worded problems—this led to avoidance of more challenging revision tasks and repeated confusion over which methods to use.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner's tendency to count out times tables instead of recalling them from memory slowed progress in fraction conversions, especially during timed activities.

Recent Achievements

One Rose Bay tutor noticed a Year 11 student who used to hesitate with trig problems now confidently writes out all his working for each question, even tackling non-right angled triangles on his own.

Another high schooler made a clear shift by arriving with all homework finished and identifying where he needed extra help, leading him to solve simultaneous equations independently after some guided practice.

In Year 5, a student who previously mixed up the order of months can now recite them without hesitation and completed multi-digit subtraction questions accurately in one sitting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Double Bay Central Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like McAuley Catholic Primary School.
