The most important thing an english tutor can do for their students is to listen, provide consistent support and most of all, build up their confidence to confront particular concepts they struggle with. I'm understanding and can compromise to best address the needs of a student. Rather than pursuing methods that are used in a traditional…

The most important things an english tutor can do are build confidence, make learning feel manageable, and create a safe space where students are not afraid to make mistakes. A tutor should guide students to understand why something works, not just memorise it, and support them in developing strong study habits and independence. My strengths are…

First things is to make them feel comfortable so that they can so their doubts. Next, understand the prior knowledge of a student and then give examples on the problems based on that. It helps them to understand various concepts easily and they start building interest in studies. Lastly, try to make education interesting for them! My main…

The most important thing I can do for a student is build their confidence in their learning. By the time I have finished a term (or 2) with my student's, they are more confident, more intuitive and approach their work with excitement. Additionally, I will provide the necessary tools for a student to carry on to their further studies. If you're a…

I think an english tutor needs to be patient and easy going in a way that students can be comfortable with, and question things they feel unable to question in their school classroom. I think tutors need to teach their students the importance of practice and resilience, especially in VCE. English is a subject which takes lots of practice and…

As an english tutor, our goal is not only for our students to pass the subject, we also want our students to reach their full potential. We can do so by giving our students our support, and giving them time to digest what they have learnt from the lesson. We can let them know that it is normal to struggle at first especially if it is a new topic…

Making sure that the student is comfortable and not to push them so soon into the problems and questions - ease them into the subject. If they are already "good" at the subject, then it comes down to being there to cultivate their skill with them. Ensuring the students understand first, then applying the fundamentals. I am a big advocate for…

Develop a good rapport with the student so they are open to expressing their fears/weaknesses. Where the student does not open us, assess exactly which area the student needs help in and focus their energy there. I develop professional relationships with pupils quite easily, and that helps break the ice. They are more open to receiving coaching. I…

I believe an english tutor should be able to explain things clearly and stop the flow of teaching when necessary if a student needs to revise a difficult concept, as I believe it is better to know the concepts now rather than leave those areas to remain unclarified and which can and does affect students come a test or exam day. I believe that a…

The most important thing an english tutor can do for a student is to be a non-judgemental listener. I believe that an english tutor is not there to chastise and 'drill' concepts into a student's mind. The best thing that a tutor can do for their student is to create a positive, uplifting and supportive learning environment. This ensures that students feel comfortable to learn and improve so that they can approach their mistakes not with…

As I have noticed with most of my tutors, they usually teach me by making me remember a methodology systematically, thus when there is a slight variation in the question it would stump me. I think giving a student a sense of confidence in their own abilities is very important as a tutor; ultimately, every student has some limitations, but to push those boundaries a little forward, a student must find the inner confidence to try a little harder, as opposed to accepting their present ability as final. As a tutor, showing a student…

Inside PlumptonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Zoe focused on foundational algebra skills, including basic equations and substitution, using worksheets for practice.

In Year 10, Lily worked through matrices as part of her early start in Data, alongside reviewing key topics for General Mathematics.

For Year 12, Chatwell's session included an overview of Business Management and English materials while also clarifying specific questions from the General Maths curriculum to set goals for the year ahead.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student working on algebraic techniques often skipped showing full steps, leading to repeated sign errors—"she'd often confuse (x, y) for (y, x)," noted her tutor.

In VCE English, one student struggled with essay writing under timed conditions; her reluctance to complete practice essays meant real exam pacing remained untested.

For a Year 6 maths topic, hesitation in answering multiplication and division questions slowed progress even when she knew the basics.

Homework was occasionally incomplete in both primary and senior levels—one missed exercise left a gap that resurfaced during review sessions.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Plumpton noticed a Year 12 student who, after previously struggling to organise her thoughts, began pinpointing her weaknesses in paragraph structure and clearly asked for targeted help.

In Year 10 maths, one student had been hesitant with algebra but recently tackled worded questions independently on the Cartesian plane and managed points placement with only light prompting.

Meanwhile, a younger student who once needed frequent guidance with fractions now answers problems without hesitation—last session she solved all equations placed in front of her unaided.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Caroline Springs Library & Learning Hub—or at your child's school (with permission), like Yarrabing Secondary College.
