I believe the most important things a tutor can do are to build confidence, create clarity, and inspire motivation. A good tutor doesn’t just explain answers — they guide students to think critically and develop problem-solving skills. By being patient, encouraging, and consistent, tutors help students feel supported and capable. I also…

As i was mentoring students at Curtin i got to realise that being a form of support not only academically but also forming a relationship with the student is the most important thing a tutor can do. Providing room for human connection and cheering the student on . I am often described as an observant and good listener, which allows me to…

Impart upon a student not knowledge per se, but rather a desire to expand their own knowledge through self-directed learning. Learning and education should be a lifelong process, not one that ends when an individual completes their primary vocational education. Learning makes us grow and develop and look at things in different ways, and the desire…

I think patience is the biggest key factor as without that there can be no way a tutor could help a student. Learning new things can be tricky and scary which is why a tutor must be able to understand a student's learning pace, be able to communicate thoroughly and also make the learning experience a fun one I am a very patient person which I…

A tutor should know the student's learning style well and be able to cater to their needs. A tutor should also provide a strong foundation to the subjects so that students can build upon this foundation and practice and get better in the future. A tutor should also build good, consistent study habits in the student, and build up the student's…

I believe that the most important function of a tutor is to foster overall academic confidence in a student and to develop better study techniques/learning habits more generally. One of the most important thing to do is to understand what the student needs. Through careful evaluation a tutor should identify the student's weakness and put more focus on that area. Another important thing is to always address their questions. Sometimes my students asked me questions which I did not know the answer to, so I looked up on the…

Inside PerthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Coen worked on calculating the area of composite figures, including sectors of circles and shapes with pieces removed, and practiced deriving and using formulas for circle areas.

In Year 10, Maya focused on matrix operations such as adding, subtracting, and scaling matrices, along with applying these to solve ticket price problems; she also tackled financial calculations involving commissions and profit/loss scenarios.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Yuri explored probability using Venn diagrams and two-way tables to express intersection, union, and conditional probabilities (P(A|B)), then applied these concepts to real-world word problems from his textbook.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student hesitated to ask her teacher for clarification outside class, leading to lingering confusion in setting up profit and stock word problems—"she was not shy about asking me, but is reticent with her teacher."

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student struggled to organize class notes into clear sections, making it harder to quickly locate formulas during revision.

In Year 7 maths, one student's tendency to solve equations entirely in his head meant crucial steps were missed on paper; errors crept in that could have been caught by writing down the process. This left him reworking problems instead of moving forward.

Recent Achievements

One Perth tutor recently noticed Maya, a Year 11 student, making a significant shift—she now methodically checks her answers and annotates her note paper with new formulas during financial maths problems, rather than rushing through calculations as she did previously.

In Year 9, Samara has started to openly question unclear concepts in lessons about piecewise graphs, moving from silent confusion to asking for clarification until things click.

Meanwhile, Freyr in Year 3 picked up three-digit addition with regrouping much faster than before and now infers answers in reading comprehension by scanning questions first.

Local Spots for Tutoring
