I believe that the most important thing which a tutor can do for a student is providing support, encouragement as well as most importantly building confidence within the subject. The importance of constructing a Childs esteem and sense of accomplishment within a subject is often disregarded however the effect of doing so is transformative within…

Increasing a student's grade or helping them understand a single concept are just some of the things that most people look for in a tutor. While these are undoubtedly worthwhile indicators of a tutor's ability to teach a student, they are often mercurial and temporary once the tutoring stops. I firmly believe that what differentiates a good tutor…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do are to build the student’s confidence, provide personalized support, and create a positive learning environment. Every student learns differently, so it’s crucial to adapt teaching methods to suit their needs. A tutor should also encourage questions and make sure the student feels comfortable…

I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do is to help the student enjoy what he/she is studying. When the student has gained the interest and really enjoy the process of learning; I believe they will definitely perform better. I believe that one of my strongest strengths is that I am very patient with students. This is because I have…

I think a tutor’s responsibility is to ensure a foundational level of understanding is reached and giving the student a space to ask questions they may not in class. I am able to think about things in different ways and recognise when something isn’t working for someone. I don’t over complicate things. I believe that explaining difficult…

I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student are 1. to develop the interests in learning, such as changing the dull mathematics class into interesting storytelling games. 2. To provide useful problem-solving tips that students can easily pick up and apply. 3. Continuously give students sense of achievements by helping them…

The most important thing would probably be being able to form an understanding of how the student learns, and then being able to adjust lessons according to that. I think also just being patient for that student to have that light bulb moment, and then commending them when they do. In addition, just holding myself somewhat accountable for the…

To teach students that it is okay to be wrong or make mistakes as long as you correct it afterwards. It is important to attempt to answer each question on a test and work sheet as if you attempt it then you might get some points on your final grade. It is also important to become self confident and trust that you can tackle any problem. I will…

One important thing a tutor can do for a student is be patient, meaning a tutor should not rush the session along and cover another topic, if the student is not fully confident with what was already covered in the session. I believe this minimises stress for a student, as they are less likely to feel pressure to learn a topic they may find…

Passing on knowledge keeping in mind the strength, weaknesses and the time required for the student to grasp the content that is being communicated. In my opinion, the relationship beyond subject tutoring is the most important aspect of a tutor. In order of doing so, a tutor must have a great…

Shruti gave me the skills and confidence in my learning and allowed me to succeed in yr 12. Shruti is like a big sister to me, I highly recommend everyone to choose her as a tutor.

Inside MulgraveTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 Oscar reviewed circle theorems involving intersecting chords, secants and tangents, as well as tackled sketching parabolas to build confidence in algebraic graphing.

For Year 7 Hayley, sessions focused on strengthening her grasp of the distributive property and using visual approaches to clarify key math operations.

Meanwhile, Year 8 student Hayley practiced explaining her problem-solving steps from a recent test and explored logic-based activities like Rebus puzzles and story riddles to enhance critical thinking alongside mathematics.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10, one student did not bring class notebooks or show workings with homework; "did not have workings to the homework I have given so reassigned it, to be completed with workings." This made it hard to spot where confusion started in algebra.

A Year 7 student avoided word problems, losing motivation when faced with longer questions—especially in story riddles—so didn't get full exposure to key reasoning skills.

In VCE maths, another relied heavily on notes and rarely attempted questions independently during revision sessions, leading to missed feedback opportunities before tests.

Recent Achievements

One Mulgrave tutor noticed a Year 11 student who previously hesitated to link math to real-life scenarios now using calculations confidently in the context of his athletic training, even initiating discussions about applying statistics from sports science.

In a recent high school session, Hayley identified where she typically lost track in multi-step linear equations and independently developed an organised approach that helped her resolve several story riddles without prompting.

Meanwhile, a primary student who used to avoid worded math problems now spots her own errors as she explains solutions aloud and manages to answer parts of challenging written questions on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Clayton Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St John Vianney's School.
