For me, passion is the most important thing. I used to be the one who didn't like maths, and the main reason was that I didn't understand it thoroughly. It might sound weird, but since I met my math teacher in high school, I have believed in the concept of PASSION, as how she delivered the lessons, her eyes, and her willingness to guide students…

First and foremost, a tutor is like a friend- one who wishes well and progress, and tries to understand without any judgement. Hence a tutor should feel like a safe space- free of any shame- where the child can ask queries and gain knowledge from. I'd say that being able to empathize with the student and to be able to find relatable examples are…

Firstly, the importance of aligning with parents and students. An excellent tutor will begin by conducting a thorough interview with the students and parents. Everyone will have a different perspective on the student's abilities, including any special needs they may have, such as ADHD. A good tutor should use different strategies for students, to…

A tutor’s first responsibility is to build a student’s confidence. Many students struggle not because they lack ability, but because they doubt themselves. By offering encouragement, celebrating progress, and reassuring them that mistakes are part of learning, a tutor can help replace fear with self-belief. Confidence often becomes the…

According to me, the tutor needs to be honest to establish rapport and trust. Be willing to adjust techniques to meet the students needs. Be patient and a good listener to understand how the student feels. Be willing to share his/her own experiences as a student helps the students feel relived and this helps in building self confidence and trust.…

Being a tutor does not always mean teaching a particular subject. Sometimes they can be a good companion in this long-haul learning journey for students. Tutoring is a two-way learning process, we also have to learn from the students and shape ourselves based on our experience to be more proficient so that we can contribute qualified and reliable…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them find meaning and joy in their studies. I think enjoying the process of learning can be the biggest motivation for a student to explore and learn more about the subject, hence performing well academically. Change their relationship with studies. Education should never feel like a chore. It can be fun and invigorating. Knowing more about the world you live in and how things around us work and exist is stimulating for the mind and soul. Being able to transfer that way of thinking to a student is easily the most important and rewarding thing one can…

Firs of all, tutors fill a different role than teachers and parents. They are able to support and encourage students from a different position. Personal relationships are vitally important to student success because the more connected a student feels to his tutor, the more the tutor creates trust and respect, which are essential ingredients for…

Inside BarangarooTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Ava focused on advanced trigonometry by reviewing her recent test and then moved on to polynomials, tackling chapter exercises and logs.

Year 10 student Tom worked through several lessons on quadratics and linear relations, with sessions dedicated to solving worded problems using algebraic methods.

For a Year 3 primary student, time was spent practising addition and subtraction strategies as well as developing reading comprehension skills through short passages.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 algebra, one student repeatedly avoided writing full working for rearranging equations—"she said, 'I just get stuck at the start,' and would hesitate to begin unless prompted."

In a senior English assignment, another left their TEEL structure incomplete and was reluctant to link arguments back to topic sentences, resulting in an unfinished draft.

A Year 11 student struggled with domain and range because revision focused only on familiar problems rather than tackling new question types; this left them underprepared for tests requiring flexible thinking.

After setbacks, confidence dropped sharply and questions went unasked, making progress slower than expected.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Barangaroo recently noticed a big shift with a Year 10 student who, after weeks of hesitation, started tackling circle geometry questions on her own and now attempts problems independently before asking for help.

In a Year 12 session, Martina made real progress—she stopped relying on example solutions and now remembers formulas well enough to solve algebraic fraction questions without prompts.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who previously stumbled over reading tasks managed to read an entire short paragraph aloud and explain its meaning without assistance.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Customs House Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Fort Street Public School.
