I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to encourage the individual to be more confident in their own abilities. This can be achieved by showing the student the most appropriate way to tackle the problem, and then rewarding them when they are able to complete the problem without any assistance. This should ultimately make the individual more confident when tackling similar problems in the future.
