What do I enjoy most about tutoring? 😁

I enjoy knowing a session has provided genuine value to a student, usually through a combination of having enabled a student to appreciate the beauty of a topic or to have generated understanding in an area that had been a source of confusion. The profound nature seen in works of great mathematicians, philosophers and scientists is often missed in the classroom, leaving kids uninspired. I believe the easiest way to teach my students something is to inspire their interest and passion first. Being a bridge to understanding and appreciation for someone is important to me.

My Strengths as Tutor πŸ’ͺ

I have a strong knowledge base to draw from as I have my Honours in a Bachelor of Advanced Science degree with a Mathematics Major and Physics Minor, as well as having studied up to 2nd year tertiary chemistry subjects. I have tutored full classes of students at the University of Queensland, including marking standard, advanced and master's level university assignments, and exams. I am highly experienced as a primary and secondary school tutor as well, the latter being my primary focus currently. I have tutored high school students both individually and in varying sized groups for many years. I excel at providing a strong but simple basis of knowledge to work with, usually through geometric, logical, or physical means. In general, my aim is to fill the gaps in a student’s knowledge basis and resolving root issues to increase confidence and ability in my students moving forwards. I also focus on objective statements directly from the curriculum to ensure a strong focus during sessions and teach my students similar methods for studying efficiently. Besides this I am always eager to show students the significance and beauty found in so many topics in mathematics and the hard sciences.

Most important things I can do for a student πŸ…

The most important thing you can do for a student is usually to inspire them, as this is the number one key to success and personal growth for them in a subject, in my opinion. Allowing students to appreciate beauty and simplicity links the value of the topics to their work in it. Of course, some students are already very passionate so for them I would say also breaking things down into simple and easy to visualize pieces so that they can appreciate the beauty and functionality of a topic without becoming lost. In general, a great thing about tuition is the ability to adapt a lesson to a student, for example, to maintain a pace that suits them, which is great every range of student. It especially important for students who are missing information from previous work, most of all in mathematics where the content builds on itself relatively consistently. Many students who perform poorly in mathematics simply need these gaps filled in to regain their confidence, although I also aim to reinforce and extend that knowledge to the advantage of the student.
