I think that most students aren't too interested in most subjects. So for a tutor, it is basically a must that they can make their lesson at least somewhat engaging for their students (since they are having time taken out of their life just to study more, there's a high likelihood that they're even more disinterested). The next most important thing is understanding your students' current capabilities. It's key to review your students' results and exams and ask questions that probe their abilities.
