I would never try to belittle them for not having prior knowledge as I understand what it feels like to be in that position. Nor would I assume any previous knowledge. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student, of course apart from being thorough in the subject matter they are teaching, is also to be very empathetic towards the student. A tutor must be able to put themselves in the student's shoes to comprehend the difficulties they are facing.
