Maya chose some questions to learn or practise. Then she wrote the examples on her cheat sheet for her test this Friday. Maya picked it up quickly and understood the processes. I helped her practise each rule by making up a similar question. This showed me that she understood and could solve it. Maya used good knowledge of Algebra to solve problems. I showed a couple of techniques to extend her skills solving algebraic equations, which might help her in the future, but she doesn't need to know too much for now. It is good when she understood why she needed to do an operation. She did well solving it step by step, and keeping the steps clear and simple, such as a+80=360, then a=360-80

It seemed to help Maya to remember a couple of the angles rules when I explained them with a diagram and example. However, sometimes it was too confusing or complicated for her, such as exterior angles. In those instances, it's completely fine for her to just remember what the rule is or write it on her cheat sheet, eg exterior angles=the sum of opposite angles in a triangle. I also encouraged Maya to remember to double check her answers as sometimes it's easy to make little mistakes, and that's why carefully solving the question one step at a time is important. Another important skill which was sometimes tricky today for Maya with Angles, is breaking it up to smaller, manageable parts. For example, imagine that the shape or lines are separate and notice one part, such as a straight line, which you can use to find other Angles.

When shown, Maya quickly picked up how to convert a percentage to a fraction and simplifying it by working out the closest factors and remainder. Visuals (including a divided bar) and real world examples (such as a cup of flour) seemed to help Maya understand what percentages and fractions represent.

Converting percentages to decimals was challenging for Maya to learn. Next time I will try to explain it in a different way, or just show the method. Maya seems to have some gaps in prior Maths topics, including multiplying, dividing, adding and subtracting fractions. As we continue it might be helpful to fill in those gaps to help her with converting.

Maya worked hard and learned methods quickly. She asked questions when she needed. Maya chose what questions and aspects she needed help to learn for the test this week, including tricky questions that she didn't know and she wrote them as examples on her cheat sheet. Sharing my screen to show examples and visuals helped me explain the method or pattern, and it helped Maya understand. Calculators are not allowed in the test, so I helped Maya practise strategies that work for her to find factors in times tables that she doesn't remember, such as working it out with what you know (eg. 7×10), and doing a short division calculation on the side.

Although we improvised by writing on the Zoom whiteboard and talking to solve Maths questions, it will be much easier if Maya has our lesson whiteboard ready for future lessons because the tools are easier. I hope Maya succeeded in her test!

Charley enjoyed using a whiteboard to write and work out amounts and time. Charley did well adding money amounts for a set budget of $20, double checking and changing it when she wanted a different product.

To help her with multiplication at school, Charley said she uses a chart up to 12 times tables that the teacher gave her.
