What do I enjoy most about tutoring? 😁
I find tutoring completely rewarding. I love being able to help students with patience and kindness and see them improve right in front of me. I love the one-on-one environment as I think high school severely lacks this. Teachers focus on certain target groups and grades; as a result, many students are neglected in this impersonal environment. One-on-one, we can work through things in steps together and at the right pace, bouncing ideas until things click. I also really appreciate the opportunity to reinforce my own knowledge, often strengthening it as problems are worked through in new ways.
My Strengths as Tutor 💪
I am very patient and can easily transfer myself into the mind-set of a tutee attempting a problem. This allows me to infer the difficulties they may be facing and the direction I need to point them in. I can remember well when I was struggling with the exact same concepts, and which techniques helped make things 'click' for me. Therefore, I can communicate well with students and form personal connections that help us form learning connections. I am loving my master's degree in physics and have a strong enthusiasm for my subjects. I want to spark this genuine interest in my students, rather than just meeting the grades.
Most important things I can do for a student 🏅
I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to open a rapport that makes them feel safe and understood, an environment where they are not afraid to try and even not afraid to fail, in the knowledge that with help and direction they can try again and do better. With the acceptance that 1 style (or even 10 styles!) of teaching will never work for every student, the ability to be flexible, creative and transparent allows teaching to be tailored to the needs of an individual. To impart a drive to succeed in a subject, a tutor needs to widen the grasp of it and its value as a whole.
