What do I enjoy most about tutoring? 😁
I personally have had very unpleasant experience with my past teachers. I understand the pain of being a student and I am often sympathetic towards the negative impacts of bad teaching practices. I enjoy helping my students, sharing my knowledge with them and watching them flourish.
To me, the excellence in subjects does not equal the excellence in teaching. The greatest fear of a teacher should be his students not being able to surpass them.
My Strengths as Tutor 💪
I am a graduate student from the University of Melbourne, I majored in psychology during my undergraduate years with English being my secondary language. The course experience in University is rigorous and challenging, but I managed to spend time pursuing my many other interests such as writing, drawing and gaming.
I have taken courses in relevant fields of education, I have studied the importance of pedagogy and I am sensitive to each of the students with their own issues.
I was born and raised in a society of collectivism and I have been studying in Australia for a very long time. My original education system was very competitive, mark-driven and intensive. I understand the importance of compassion and interest, and I also see the necessity of ambition and devotion in achieving greatness. To me, building up academic confidence requires more than compliment and encouragement, it also needs the courage to face challenges and the determination to persist. I aim to create an intriguing and fulfilling experience for my students with adequate challenges and goals. I have learned the knowledge from my past experience and now it is my turn to share them.
Most important things I can do for a student 🏅
I can adjust my teaching according to each student's situation and issues. Different students may have vastly different gaps in their knowledge, it is important for tutors to plan their teaching accordingly to provide efficient help. I aim to devote effort in identifying these gaps and adapt my methods accordingly.
I can also provide students with appropriate methods for academic success. Sometimes one may not have the compassion for all his subjects, or sometimes compassion is just simply not enough. Good methods can be short-cuts for academic success. Subjects such as maths require the accumulation of both knowledge and experience, which can only be gained through practice. Students without efficient methods often find themselves spending more time but achieving less, identifying themselves as "not smart enough", impacting their self-esteem, determination and interest. This can be highly damaging, not only to academic achievements but also the mental health of a growing mind. Personally, I never spent too much time studying, I know the methods to make learning efficient and I will share them with my students. I will also constantly enforce these methods, reminding students of them and making them beneficial habits.
I also provide students with revision sessions before each of his/her exams. Doing well in exams does not always require the mastery of a subject. Short-term success can sometimes be achieved by boosted confidence and the familiarity with the content, achieving improvement without extensive tutoring. This can also act as a good source for inspiring interests and reducing the fear of the challenges.
