What do I enjoy most about tutoring? 😁

What I enjoy most about tutoring is witnessing the transformation in my students. Many start their first lesson feeling uncertain and hesitant about their mathematical abilities. But with each session, I see their confidence grow—not just in solving problems, but in articulating their thought process with clarity and assurance. Looking back on my years of tutoring, nothing makes me prouder than seeing students develop both their mathematical reasoning and their self-belief.

My Strengths as Tutor 💪

I have over two years of tutoring experience, working with university, primary, and high school students. My ability to connect with students from diverse backgrounds allows me to adapt my teaching style to their unique learning needs, ensuring they feel supported and engaged. As a Bachelor of Advanced Mathematics student at UNSW, I have a deep understanding of the mathematical concepts within the school curriculum. I don’t just teach formulas—I help students develop a strong foundation by tailoring my explanations to their individual learning styles. My goal is to make math more intuitive and accessible, so students build confidence and long-term problem-solving skills. Beyond tutoring, I have extensive mentoring experience, particularly as a Department Lead at Sunswift Racing, a world-record-breaking solar car team. In this role, I guide new recruits, providing them with the resources they need to succeed while fostering a supportive learning environment. This mentorship experience enhances my ability to work patiently with students, ensuring they feel comfortable asking questions and developing a genuine interest in learning.

Most important things I can do for a student 🏅

The most important thing I can do is continuously adapt to a student’s evolving learning needs. Students are at a crucial stage of cognitive development, and their understanding can shift from one lesson to the next. A tutor must assess their learning style in every session, adjusting explanations and approaches accordingly. What worked well in one lesson may not be as effective in the next. True teaching isn’t just about delivering information—it’s about staying attentive to how a student responds, ensuring they feel supported, engaged, and continually challenged.

About Sooyoung

Exceptional Academic Achiever

I have dedicated my life to the rigorous study of mathematics, extending my passion into university and beyond. My deep understanding of mathematical concepts serves as a versatile toolkit, allowing me to tailor each lesson to suit a student’s unique learning style. With a high-achieving mindset and well-honed study skills, I have not only excelled academically but also earned a position as an official tutor at UNSW, demonstrating my commitment to both mastery and mentorship in mathematics.

Industry Applied Mathematician

As Department Lead and Chief Strategist for Sunswift Racing, a world-record-breaking electric vehicle team, I apply advanced mathematical modeling to optimize the car’s energy consumption, efficiency, and race strategy. My work includes developing a speed recommendation system tailored for competitive conditions, ensuring peak performance. The effective application of mathematics played a key role in securing a world record—Sunswift became the fastest EV to travel over 1,000 km on a single charge, maintaining an average speed of over 84 km/h for 12 hours.

Co-founder of Football Club

I am passionate about football—so much so that I co-founded a football club to bridge the gap between casual play and high-level events. What started as a small initiative has grown into a thriving community of over 50 members within a year, supported by a dedicated management and media team. As we continue to expand, our goal is to transition into a more competitive, commercially sustainable club, driven by an enthusiastic and committed player base.
