What do I enjoy most about tutoring? 😁
Tutoring has always been a part of my life, having two younger sisters and guiding them through their school mathematics up to year 10 level. My favourite part is seeing the student's progress and personal confidence increase from the tutoring. In the last few years I ran a full-year tutoring program for SACE where I tutored over multiple subjects, and seeing their results at school improve throughout the year was so rewarding, and is exactly what motivates me to enjoy tutoring more and more.
My Strengths as Tutor 💪
I believe my strong academic abilities combined with my clear explanation style help me excel as a tutor. Undertaking university engineering has given me a lot of practice translating complex concepts and jargon into 'normal' English and explaining it to fellow students (or myself, in my notes!). Additionally, my 2.5+ years experience tutoring and mentoring in multiple capacities (as an Access Monash Mentor, as a private tutor, as a casual tutor for my sisters and friends, and as a John Monash Co-curricular Mentor) means I am already proficient in tutoring procedures and discipline.
Most important things I can do for a student 🏅
The most important things a tutor can do for a student is encourage, empower, and explain. Encouraging students to keep going, keep practicing, and keep learning is extremely important for improvement, while empowering students to feel confident in their abilities is invaluable in helping them tackle new problems, and applying knowledge to the real world. Finally, explanation is at the core of tutoring because it is the fundamental way that tutors can transfer knowledge and skills to the student.

Jacob has again sped up his addition, consistently getting all his regrouping addition questions correct and completing addition problems in the thousands. He also volunteered to do more challenging questions, which he got correct and was able to complete in a very reasonable time.
Jacob still struggles with his confidence when he gets more than one question wrong, and will often look at me for clarification before trying out the question on his own. As he tried to be speedy, some of the processes of long subtraction questions were forgotten (particularly the ones that needed regrouping). This can be easily improved through increased practice.

Today Jacob was able to do addition problems very quickly, and as a result I gave him a challenging question that required him to add two numbers in the ten thousands. Although he wasn't able to read the number, be provided sufficient working out alongside the correct answer, thoroughly impressing me.
Jacob actually did really well this lesson with both his addition and subtraction maths problems. If her continued to practice at this progress, he will no doubt have a strong foundation in maths. Well done!

Jacob is very much engaged in the classes and does well overall. Today he was doing particularly well with the connect 4/5 maths Activites which require him to constantly switch between addition and subtraction.
Sometimes he is still unsure of certain answers and will always consult with my response or body language before continuing with his maths problems. This shows a slight lack of confidence but this will definately change with time as he ii s currently making great progress.

It is clear that Jacob is improving significantly with his subtraction with regrouping (I.e subtracting with zero) and has learnt the method of clear working out to follow the process carefully. Additionally his speed with addition has increased significantly. For example he is now able to do a normal 10 minute activity with doubles addition in less than 5 minutes.
Jacob sometimes struggles to count backwards when the starting number is much higher and he may become uncomfortable and start guessing the answer. I have since taught him the number line method so that he is able to visualise the counting physically. He was then able to do the questions when this was provided to him.
