What do I enjoy most about tutoring? 😁
One of the things I really enjoy about tutoring is searching for various methods to teach a concept to a student. Each person visualises, understands and absorbs information differently, and often the differentiating factor between a suitable and unsuitable tutor for a certain student is whether the tutor is able to explain things in a way that particular student can grasp. For me, the search to find the optimum explanation for each individual is stimulating and seeing the moment a student grasps a concept that has been difficult for them to understand till then, is extremely rewarding.
My Strengths as Tutor 💪
My strengths as a tutor is my ability to understand and accept what the students’ concerns are, and the emphasis I have on teaching ‘why’ and not just ‘how’. Being a student, I understand how it feels to have a very important question but hesitating to ask the tutor because it feels ‘dumb’ to ask. As a tutor I am very conscious of how I make students feel and ensure that they feel free to ask me anything . Furthermore, I believe it is vital to know why something is being done, as this is what encourages problem solving and critical thinking when questions shift to application type questions.
Most important things I can do for a student 🏅
As a tutor, I believe it is crucial to understand the exact knowledge gap a student may have and helping them by clarifying the root of their doubt. I did Methods and Specialist ATAR, and the roots of my doubts went to the basics - I think the fundamental area to work on for success is proficiency in the basics, which ensures any advancement from that can be tackled by the student, and this is also why I want to tutor year 7 - 10 students. Another crucial aspect I believe is make sure a tutor is not robotic, and approaches each student as a different individual with different needs.

Compared to last time Alida knew how to answer more questions and she is understanding the pattern of the questions better now. There are some questions where she is really confident and she will answer them well in the exam.
Alida tries to memorise some questions hoping it would be helpful in the exam, however memorising the questions won't work as it would be asked differently in the exam. I have taught her the questions she was memorising so she understands them better, but she does need to brush up on the basics to understand questions instead of memorising them.

Alida understood which questions she needed help with and which questions she needs to focus on. She identified the topics she is weak in, and she learnt them quite quickly.
There is quite a lot of concepts that Alida needs to learn more in depth to do well in the exam. She either knows a topic really strongly, or she doesn't know about it at all. We did focus on the concepts she was struggling with but she needs to practice those specific questions more to do well on the exam.
Alida understood the explanations I gave for the questions she didn't know. It was good that she had basic understanding of the topics that were covered.

Given she is aiming for the higher marks, she definitely needs to start learning and revising earlier and make sure that she understand topics in greater depth. If she wants to see improvement, then we need to have lessons more regularly.
Lara has significantly improved! There were no questions where she didn't show enough working out, and she really understood how to approach the harder questions.

The mistakes she did were like forgetting to add units or forgetting to simplify the final answer. We made a checklist on what she has to keep an eye out for when she is rechecking her answers, and these kind of things are what she is looking out for.
