What do I enjoy most about tutoring? 😁
It is kind of like telling a story. Especially with maths - you start faced with a challenge/unknown problem, then you demystify it through a kind of narrative.
The most amazing thing about teaching maths is how consistently the narrative is written - every concept is interconnected and through an intuitive approach to learning you can give a student an idea of the big picture, and thus the tools to make their own conclusions about the specifics (before you even taught them the specifics). The process of getting someone to truly understand the concepts is the most rewarding part.
My Strengths as Tutor 💪
I am currently studying a Bachelor of Engineering/Computer Science at Monash University and have completed VCE Specialist Maths and Mathematical Methods, so I am well versed in the content being taught.
Looking past qualifications however, and perhaps more importantly, I teach so that the student can understand the rationale behind the concepts being explored. Memorisation and rote learning have their place, but understanding is King with regards to a student's performance.
Most important things I can do for a student 🏅
The requisite ability of a tutor is to teach, but the far more difficult and far more important task is to give context on what a student is learning. In other words, to explain why you would want to study, what you can do with a good ATAR and to show them the potential that is so easy to overlook whilst you're in school.
It becomes so strikingly clear to everyone what opportunities you had, after they're already gone. Giving a student some foresight and inspiration is more valuable than anything you could teach them.
