Impart a positive growth mindset for the student. In this way the students can overcome challenges themselves, and have a positive attitude to study. I have a growth mindset, I believe everyone can improve over time. I am patient and positive. I am reassuring to students and have a warm, friendly…

Having the correct materials and being able to supply such materials whenever the students may need it. Also the ability to be flexible, for example if one of my students has a test coming up, I would do everything I can to help them do well. I'm very open-minded and I learn quickly. For example if I make a mistake I am more than happy to be…

I think building confidence and a long-lasting appreciation of learning in a particular subject are the best things a tutor can give to a student. Understanding of content is useful for improving grades in the short-term, but acquiring sustainable skills that will persist beyond the teaching period is an advantage that will be useful for life. I…

A tutor can make the learning experience easy, approachable, and crafted in such a way that the whole experience should be purposeful by putting the learners need first. My education is my strength. Having a keen knowledge of my subject is my ultimate strength. However I'm honest and enthusiastic about teaching, I am a good listener as well as a…

Ensuring students develop a holistic understanding of the problem solving process, not just memorising solutions. Throughout university, multiple times I've seen friends blindly copy down solutions without understanding how they got there and then struggle with similar problems in tests/exams. My main strength as a tutor is that genuinely enjoy…

An important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make sure they are focusing on areas of study that the student struggles with that they might miss out on in school to ensure they are doing the best that they can. My strengths as a tutor are that I am very interactive and enjoy allowing students to participate as I find this makes learning…

As a tutor there are many things that I can do to ensure my student feels well supported. I understand that each of my students are different and will have different needs. As a tutor, I will be responsible for ensuring I understand what my student is struggling with, where my student needs extra help and then doing my best to support them so they…

The most important things a tutor can do are to build a student’s confidence, create a comfortable space for questions, and adapt to their learning style. I also focus on breaking down concepts slowly and thoroughly, especially in challenging areas—a method I learned from my dad. Though it frustrated me as a kid, I now see how this approach…

I would say the most important thing is making the learning experience enjoyable for the pupil more than anything else. By making tutoring enjoyable, it provides a better overall outcome for the pupil. I am patient, and realise different pupils can require different amounts of time, attention and sometimes need a different style of learning which…

Once you can successfully change the perception through bringing innovation and interest in study, it becomes very useful for a Student for rest of his life as…

Most important things a tutor can do for a student is to understand the student, his capacity, learning ways, his strengths and weakness, etc. and helping the student further on that. Every student has different needs where they are to focus and a tutor is required to help them with these. A better communication and understanding leads to a better…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to recognize one's inclination towards a particular subject, sport and encourage/guide the student in a proper way. Helping students believe in their abilities is just as important as teaching the material. Encouragement and positive reinforcement go a long way. Everyone learns differently, so tailoring explanations and methods to fit the student's needs can make all the difference. Instead of just giving answers, a tutor should encourage students to think…

The most important thing tutoring did for me was providing a deeper understanding of complicated topics that were hard to grasp. It is also important to be someone that the student feels comfortable coming to with help. So by showing understanding and appreciation for their effort, a student doesn't feel concerned for getting an answer wrong of…

I feel that understanding the student's weak areas and trying to make him/her feel less intimidated with the problems is the main role of a tutor. Also, another important task of a tutor is to simplify tasks for his/her students. One on one teaching is my speciality. I can simplify problems to students who find it difficult to do the math. Also, I…

Helping them to find multiple ways to solve problems instead of telling them answers. It is also important to ensure that they can solve the problem independently and be able to solve the problem in different ways. Through my own experience in studying math, I think practising various types of questions is also great to improve and learn. Most…

Very easy to get started. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Quick service with the actual tutor calling almost the next day to sort out when available. Big improvement in my Year 9 child's math studies. It has really helped her to understand Maths; with her knowledge being quite basic to start with. Was failing and within 3 months got her first pass in a major math test.

Inside Point CookTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Daniel focused on solving linear equations and modelling real-world scenarios with them, along with annuity and interest calculations in financial mathematics.

In Year 11, Emily worked through Math Methods Unit 1 and 2, tackling polynomials, functions, and the application of quadratic equations using chapter-based exercises.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Josh practiced Further Maths matrices modules—transposing matrices and interpreting networks—and reviewed past exam papers to strengthen problem-solving speed and accuracy under timed conditions.

Recent Challenges

Several students in both primary and secondary years relied heavily on calculators or online modules instead of practicing key maths operations by hand, especially with algebra and negative numbers.

For example, one Year 8 student was encouraged to "do more pen and paper practice rather than relying on Math Pathway modules" after missing steps in factorization exercises.

In VCE Maths Methods, another student's messy working made it hard to spot errors before tests—"a dedicated workbook to write the steps in detail" was suggested for clarity. This sometimes led to extra time spent retracing unclear calculations during revision sessions.

Recent Achievements

One Point Cook tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 11 student who, after weeks of mixing up steps, is now carefully listing every stage of advanced algebra factorisation before checking answers—he'd previously skipped straight to solutions and made small errors.

A Year 12 student has started timing herself on statistics extended-response questions; she used to get stuck for ages but now completes each in under fifteen minutes, which is a real change in her exam readiness.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 student who often guessed at tricky spellings now points out when she's unsure and asks for help spelling new words aloud during lessons.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Point Cook Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Lumen Christi School.
