I believe it is essential for tutors to help students build confidence and self esteem in a subject. I think every student can do well if they have confidence and positive feelings towards a subject, regardless of what level they perform at initially. Another thing a tutor should do is to find the student’s preferred method of learning, and…

To me, the most important thing is to teach and make the student not to feel any less of him or herself. I would always try to inculcate positive thinking into my students mind as it is very important at that age for them to know that everything is possible and achievable. With this attitude, giving up in anything will never occur to them in…

The most important things to a student are when their tutor is honest, patient, a good listener, and confident in their teaching. Sometimes when the tutor tends to share their own experiences, it builds up the connection between the tutor and the student. Once there is a friendly environment between the two parties, it will be more advantageous…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, are: 1. Foster a love of learning: The best tutors inspire curiosity and make learning enjoyable, not just a chore. 2. Build confidence: Many students struggle with self-doubt. A tutor can help them believe in their abilities and tackle challenges with a positive…

I believe a tutor should be a mentor, someone the student can relate to and feel comfortable expressing their problems to, but should also be assertive and draw the line between being professional and being a friend. I think a tutor should do her best to teach the student to the best of his/her abilities, even if that means going slightly over…

The most important things a tutor can do to a student is to not teach, but to make them understand what is being taught, and thereby boost their confidence. Merely parroting out concepts to students would get the job done, but will not help the student understand any better, or feel any more confident. Instead, understanding where the student is…

To encourage them to persevere even when they find their studies difficult. My opinion is that equipping them with the knowledge they need is only a small part of the job. We should not only assist students only to understand the materials provided but also teach them the skills of how to learn effectively and what to do when encountering the new lesson/content of knowledge…

Inside Mont AlbertTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student James focused on Statistics, Networks and Matrices, working through practical problems to consolidate understanding.

Year 7 student Aston tackled algebraic equations involving fractions and worked on simplifying values across different numerators, often using colour coding and textbook resources for clarity.

Meanwhile, Year 4 student Sophie practised converting between whole numbers and improper fractions and completed worksheet exercises to strengthen her foundational maths skills.

Recent Challenges

Homework is left until the last minute which creates a bottleneck during tuition. A Year 9 student repeatedly left homework incomplete, with work often delayed until just before lessons. This habit meant less time for feedback and review in class.

In Year 11 English, there was difficulty integrating teacher feedback into new writing tasks—old errors crept back because earlier corrections weren't actively referenced.

For a Year 5 student, inconsistent handwriting and missed spelling practice made it hard to track progress over weeks.

One senior student's tendency to rely on familiar online maths methods sometimes blocked adoption of more efficient approaches in class.

Recent Achievements

One Mont Albert tutor recently noticed a Year 11 student who, after struggling with network concepts and statistics, was able to pinpoint exactly where he'd gone wrong in his test papers—he now talks through mistakes out loud instead of guessing.

Another high schooler has shifted from solving every question laboriously to spotting patterns and intuiting answers during multiple-choice practice; he actively suggests shortcuts, showing real independence.

In primary sessions, a Year 4 student who used to avoid homework is now tackling assignments early in the week and even identified all key points in worded maths problems without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Balwyn Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Our Holy Redeemer School.
