A tutor must be engaging and knowledgeable so that the student will want to pay attention and learn efficiently I am energetic and fun - I find it really easy to engage with students which really brings down the barrier between teacher and student. I also know how to really break down a problem and demonstrate this to the pupil so that they…

Teach them how to be bold and to believe in themselves. Not to be afraid to ask questions or feel guilty for doing so. To not be shy about having certain difficulties in subjects and build their confidence in it by helping them look at concepts from a different perspective. I can simplify concepts and understand where the student’s difficulty…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make them feel confident in their understanding, which allows them to be better learners overall. This is done through understanding how they learn things best, whether through diagrams, metaphors, or a direct example of the concept to start. This allows them to build…

A tutor is not just only someone who's there to help with homework questions, but more importantly questions outside the classroom. This was something I cherished as a student as I didn't have any role models who could tell me what exam techniques are the best for someone like me or what life is like after HSC, and so on! It's about building a…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to not only help them with any difficulties they may be experiencing, but hopefully make them feel at the end that they are more confident. This way they are equipped and able to approach many future problems successfully whether they have encountered them before or not. I am extremely…

Having a tutor can provide students an opportunity to learn in an environment free of the pressures/distractions of a classroom. Creating this safe space for learning can allow a student to master previously insurmountable learning challenges and restore their confidence. This experience can divert students from disengaging with learning and alter…

The most important thing a tutor has to do in my opinion, is to quickly gain a very in-depth profile of their students' strengths and weaknesses, general skill level, and approach to studying, so the tutor is able to help them more effectively and focus on the areas that needs to be focused on which will vary from student to student. I think my…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is make the student feel genuinely heard and understood. When students know they’re in a safe space—where their questions are welcomed and their struggles are respected—they’re more open to learning. From there, it’s about guiding them patiently, adapting to how they learn best, and…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do are to build the student’s confidence, create a safe space for learning, and make the material meaningful. The most important things a tutor can do for a student is how they act towards the student. Not everyone can be a tutor although they have the same information, the same marks at school or university. They must know how to talk to the student or the student will choose to ignore what they have said and refuse to learn. A tutor needs to provide the…

Encourage and motivate. Second and third only to giving them complete guidance. Showing them how they can get there and that they are completely able. As a tutor I believe you should never give up. Our girls love the tutor. There confidence in math is stronger
Esther, Marrickville

Inside MarrickvilleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Olivia worked on multiplying fractions by whole numbers and completed a maths assessment to check understanding across key topics.

In Year 7, James practised index laws and simplifying expressions with like terms, using step-by-step examples for clarity.

Meanwhile, Year 8 student Mia focused on calculating area and volume of 3D shapes as well as tackling multi-step worded questions involving both two- and three-dimensional figures.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 mathematics, one student tended to rush through multiplication problems, leading to repeated small errors—"he made little mistakes with multiplication while trying to get through the maths work as quickly as possible."

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student struggled with times tables and would often guess rather than calculate answers for division or fraction tasks.

In Year 7 English, a reluctance to argue from another perspective meant written responses were shorter and less developed.

During homework in Year 4, spelling activities left a student frustrated and distracted when difficult words slowed progress; unfinished sections remained at lesson's end.

Recent Achievements

A Marrickville tutor recently noticed that Sophie, a high school student, now independently works through mixed word problems in maths tests—last term she needed reminders for every step, but this week she finished 1.5 tests in the time needed for one and went back to check her answers without prompting.

Another win: Olivia, also in high school, has started fixing mistakes in her fraction calculations before writing them down, where previously she'd skip checking altogether.

In Year 4 English, Leon moved from short sentences to adding more detail on his own; last session he wrote four connected sentences with clear arguments about wisdom versus money.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Inner West Council Library & History: Marrickville Branch—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Brigid's Catholic Primary School.
