The most important things tutors can do is to be enthusiastic and engaging about the subject their teaching their student because this then allows students to believe too, that the subject they're learning is not boring or bad. Moreover, tutors must have confidence in their student in succeeding and doing well, in which the Pygmalion effect proves…

I think the most important thing about being a tutor is meeting your students on their terms. What I mean by that is that you never make them feel stupid for not knowing, or not understanding something. I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to help not feel embarrassed by the gaps in their knowledge, and work with them…

Encouraging them and reminding them that their school marks are not what entirely defines them as a good student. On top of providing them with academic support and guidance that they can apply to other fields. For instance, how to structure an exemplar essay or simply how to construct a study timetable. Finding unique ways to interpret notes and…

An open environment, a student should not feel embaressed when asking questions or having a problem with their school work. This can be a problem sometimes in a classroom environment as some children may riddicule the child. This open environment is important for a tutor as the student should feel open to ask questions without peer judgement. A…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is listen. This is crucial as it allows the tutor to know how the student is struggling and with what part in order to better teach them. The one thing more than anything that a tutor can do is to offer a safe place where students will not be afraid of failure. Then guide them step by step until they understand the concept, and encourage them to carry on even when things get difficult. A good tutor gives confidence and no knowledge. Individualised learning is also important as tailoring lessons to meet each student's unique needs and learning styles ensures they grasp concepts effectively. We signed up with a tutor who didn't work out and the EzyMath team worked hard to find us a new one as fast a possible. Their communication during the process was great and they kept me informed about how they were going to find the right tutor for my child.

Inside KellyvilleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Sofia focused on indices, scientific notation, and significant figures, as well as financial maths applications through targeted textbook problems.

In Year 9, Riaan worked on factorising and expanding quadratics and deepened his understanding of trigonometric functions by applying them to worded problems and geometry questions.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Olivia practised calculating the distance and midpoint of a line segment and explored bivariate data concepts including correlation and constructing frequency histograms.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 algebra, one student's written work lacked clear structure, making it difficult to spot errors in factorising non-monic quadratics—he skipped showing steps in expanding (a-b)², which hid sign mistakes.

For a Year 10 student revising for exams, revision focused mainly on familiar index laws while harder questions were left undone; this meant the leap to complex surds and log rules was unsteady.

Meanwhile, in Year 6 English, a strong plan didn't translate into organised paragraphs when writing independently, with ideas drifting off-topic. The hesitation led to frustration as completed drafts felt disconnected from initial outlines.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Kellyville recently saw Keenan achieve a big turnaround: after previously lower marks, he scored 80 and 76 percent in his latest exams, showing much stronger understanding and fewer "silly mistakes."

In Year 10 maths, one student who used to get stuck on harder quadratic equations can now solve them confidently—even using the quadratic formula independently. Meanwhile, a primary student who often rushed through writing tasks began noticing and correcting spelling errors on his own as he wrote, instead of waiting for feedback—he even caught himself before handing work in.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Stanhope Garden Library/ Dennis Johnson Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Kellyville Public School.
