Initially, he/she must understand the background (educational / intellectual) of the student(s). Moreover, need to understand on where the student is struggling and what he/she wants to achieve. It will give a tutor a great perspective on when and how to start. Then, develop a lesson plan accordingly. Be the guide but not a helper of a student. It…

Great question — and honestly, what matters most depends a bit on the student’s needs, but here are some core things that I think every great tutor should do: 1. Create a Safe, Supportive Space A tutor should make students feel comfortable asking any question without fear of judgment. Learning only happens when students feel safe to say,…

In my opinion, the tutor can make the boring subjects interesting and can also turn an interesting subject to be boring. So, a teacher plays a major role in shaping future of children and that all depends on the skills of a teacher. Building relations with good communication skills and not giving up until I accomplish my task of clearing doubts…

The most important thing a tutor can do is teach a student not just how to solve problems or answer questions, but the mindset needed to succeed in approaching unknown questions. I have a high degree of communication and awareness- if I can see that a student is struggling with a particular idea, I am able effectively explain and clarify any areas…

The most important aspect of tutoring, besides providing students with better grades, is allowing them to feel comfortable when I am tutoring them. A logical concomitant of comfort is a better ability to learn and as a consequence better results. Thus, I place a great emphasis on understanding the idiosyncrasies of the student and allowing them to…

I think it is important to be patient with your students. Some students are slower to learn than others, and others learn things in different ways compared to the rest. If you have the patience to teach them all properly, then it really shows on their performance. I believe that one of my strength is that I take pride in teaching my students. If…

To listen to the students' needs. Once you understand someone's problem, working with them to fix it is a lot easier, and this applies to education as well. Understanding leads to being able to provide a personalized learning experience for the student, ensuring they are more successful. Being approachable and accommodating are two of my biggest…

I believe that tutors need to help students feel confident in their ability. When a student feels more confident in their work they will be able to see more clearly their potential and this will help them perform better in their assessments. Tutors need to be supportive of students and encourage them to work hard, not do all their work for them.…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to instill confidence and foster a growth mindset. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to address their needs and help them achieve their goal to the best of their ability. For this to happen there needs to be a clear understanding of what the student's goal(s) is and from there begin establishing a solid foundation for communication. It is important to maintain this…

Local Reviews

We had our 1st session tonight with David and it went really well. My son connected with him immediately even though he was nervous about tutoring and didn't really want to do it prior to tonight. After he had his session with David he said it was fun! I was pleasantly surprised to hear him say that and he asked that David come back next week instead of waiting a fortnight! We are very happy so far.

Inside IllawongTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Olivia focused on understanding fractions, decimals, and percentages, including converting between them and revisiting previous skills for an upcoming topic test.

In Year 11, Jack worked through the introduction to networks by learning key terminology, practicing how to travel and draw networks, and then progressed to solving problems using Prim's and Kruskal's algorithms.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Mia explored critical path analysis—drawing diagrams with and without dummies—and developed her skills in forward/backward scanning to determine project timelines.

Recent Challenges

In Year 12 Mathematics, a student occasionally overlooked writing down unused edges first in Prim's algorithm—she sometimes forgot to make sure that in Prim's algorithm the edges that weren't used have to be written down first—which led to confusion when reviewing solutions.

A Year 11 learner hesitated to ask questions, so gaps persisted and confidence wavered during difficult recurrence relation problems.

In Year 7, one student skipped regular independent revision; this meant that methods for simplifying fractions weren't retained from week to week.

For a Year 4 pupil, homework was incomplete, so subtraction practice stalled and mistakes repeated themselves across sessions.

Recent Achievements

One Illawong tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 10 student who previously hesitated to speak up, but now asks for help independently as soon as she gets stuck—especially when working through tricky network diagrams.

In Year 8 maths, a student who used to rely heavily on step-by-step guidance tackled cosine and sine rule problems independently after some initial practice. This surprised their tutor and marked real progress in their confidence.

Meanwhile, during a recent Year 4 session, a child who'd struggled with fractions was able to spot his own mistakes and explain how he fixed them before moving on to the next question.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Menai Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Illawong Public School.
