Well, one is to build the student's confidence! I want them to be able to think independently and instil in their minds to avoid the use of AI tools like ChatGPT. I want to create a comfortable space where they can make mistakes and learn from them! A good tutor does not just give the answers, and I'd guide them to find the answers themselves. 1:1…

The most importat thing I believe is to be available for a student when he/she needs you. It is also important to be accessible to them by answering all their doubts and be there for them till they understand a certain concept. I can be a student's friend and help them understand every concept by being their confidante. I can make them enjoy their…

My focus is always on life-long learning, not just in a particular subject or area, but rather on skills and mindsets that allow the students to grow, not just in academics, but in their lives. Hence, the best thing a tutor can do for a student is to encourage and build these mindsets and approaches to learning. Definitely being patient with the…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is make the student feel safe to learn. That means creating a space where they can ask questions, make mistakes, and not feel judged. A tutor should listen, be patient, and explain things in a way that makes sense to the student, not just repeat the same thing. It’s also important to build their…

The most important things a tutor can do are to offer personalized support, create a positive and encouraging learning environment, and build the student’s confidence. By adapting teaching methods to suit the individual needs of each student, a tutor can help them grasp difficult concepts more effectively. Creating a supportive environment…

I strongly believe that a good tutor can change the entire perception of the subject for a student. Throughout my life I have been fortunate enough to be in the presence of inspiring teachers because of which I developed a strong liking for my subjects. A good tutor is one who can understand the needs of the student and execute it in the most…

In my opinion, firstly should form a good relationship with students, because it is important that students are willing to communicate and ask questions, secondly, try to make students being passionate and take the initiative to learn knowledge rather than being force-feeded, and as a tutor, I should not just unilaterally output knowledge, but…

A tutor is very important in providing support outside school. Ensuring that the student finds learning to be fun and interesting, in my opinion, is more important than focusing on higher grades. As a tutor, it is important to cultivate interest in students and create knowledge. I am great at teaching students with learning disabilities and…

I think the most important would definitely be creating a connection with the students so that they feel comfortable around the tutor. This helps them love studying and also comfortable in asking doubts to the tutor. I think my biggest strength as a tutor is definitely my patience. I can patiently explain the same concepts to my students…

1)As a tutor it is very important to understand student's personal needs and cater studies according to that. Get to know them, take few counselling sessions as that would help in getting to know students in a broader way. 2)Be Creative-It is very important for a tutor to be creative. Explaining the same topic in different ways makes a lot of…

Patience is the most inevitable element. I think tutor should dedicate the most of their time, even outside of tutoring session, to answer students inquiry. This shows responsibility and how much a tutor care about their students Patience and well-communication skill. I think it’s important to identify what the student is struggling, hence help…

I believe building an understanding about the student and the ways in which they learn best is what separates a tutor from a textbook. The personal skills needed to determine that are most important as it then allows the customisation of learning. Because my understanding of concepts are very logical, I am able to give explanations depending on…

Inside FitzroyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Gus focused on measurement skills including unit conversions, perimeter, and an introduction to surface area, as well as exploring the angle sum in triangles.

In Year 9, Maryam worked on solving simultaneous equations using substitution and elimination, then applied these methods to practical problems.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Ali reviewed operations with fractions—adding, subtracting, multiplying with different denominators—and extended this knowledge to simplifying algebraic fractional expressions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 6 student in Fitzroy showed difficulty setting out work neatly and consistently dating pages, making it harder to track progress—especially when tackling worded measurement problems.

As one tutor observed, "she struggles to walk through questions speaking out loud," which made it tough to clarify her thinking on fraction conversions and unit changes.

In Year 10 English, a student forgot to submit an essay by the deadline, delaying feedback and causing extra stress before class.

A senior maths student arrived unprepared for sessions without essential materials like a pen or laptop; this slowed the start and limited practice time.

Recent Achievements

One Fitzroy tutor noticed a Year 11 student, Celeste, who used to hesitate with trigonometry word problems now confidently solves bearings and graphing tasks on her own—she even tackles complex questions without prompting.

In another session, Maryam (Year 10) moved from confusion about box plots to clearly explaining five-figure summaries and solving simultaneous equations using both substitution and elimination methods.

Meanwhile, in Year 6 maths, Ella showed a shift from struggling with measurement topics to independently working through area and volume questions, finishing her test section on these without needing hints.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fitzroy Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sacred Heart School.
