A tutor, more than simply teach content, should be able to make their subject enjoyable, open and motivational for students. A successful tutor is one whose influence goes beyond the tutoring center, and drives greater change in the students academic and personal life. My own experiences with a great math tutor in high school supplement this view.…

I believe that teachers/tutors make the greatest impact on a developing child or young adult's mind. Apart from the child's family, a teacher/tutor has the most influential face to face contact with a student, where it be as a mentor or as a friend. Hence, I strongly feel that tutors have the opportunity and responsibility to educate and develop a…

Provide support, of course through teaching content, but most importantly by the way we deliver the information and provide feedback. I feel personally demotivated to study and understand a certain subject when my teacher/tutor would word their explanations in a demeaning way such as "You should have known this" etc. Instead saying "Yep you've got…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is to empathise. To learn about why the student is having difficulties and as such, problem solving and troubleshooting, taking each individual factor into account. This helps to create a nurturing and safe environment for students, and when not in constant fear of being wrong, students can…

Honestly, I think one of the most important things a tutor can do is help the student feel comfortable and confident. It’s not just about getting better at Maths, English, or Science—it’s about helping them believe that they can get better. A lot of students come in already feeling nervous or like they’re ‘bad’ at something, and I…

Tutor's should prioritise the relationship between the student and their learning. To be consistently achieving learning goals and improving their overall knowledge, students have to a hold passion and love for their work. Its their tutor's job to build a space where the individual builds an interest and passion to learn. Therefore, working step…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is not only to clearly and effectively teach content but also to share their knowledge and their own personal experiences from the past. This allows students to remain calm, focused and prepared for the hurdles they are yet to overcome. This combined with effective teaching will only…

Being patient in allowing students to fully grasp a topic or idea before proceeding. Not regurgitate the same information given on google or at schools regarding their difficult topics, but instead to approach the student and the lesson with the ambition to simplify complexities in your own intuitive way. Helping understanding topics and key areas is important, however for me, giving students the confidence to approach new topics with a 'can-do' attitude helps them in wider areas of their life and increases their self belief. Inside Bow BowingTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Lachlan practised three-digit addition and subtraction along with multiplication, focusing on improving calculation speed.

For Year 8 Maths, Aryan tackled the basics of probability and chance, including sample space using everyday examples.

Meanwhile, in Year 10 Maths, Leon worked through financial maths topics from his textbook, particularly simple and compound interest problems and real-life money scenarios.

Recent Challenges

Several high school students in Bow Bowing showed process obstacles impacting progress.

For example, a Year 11 student tackling algebra and trigonometry relied heavily on calculators, missing sign errors—"he needs to be careful on his signs with algebra," as one tutor observed—which meant time spent correcting rather than learning new content.

In Year 9, another student struggled with exam-style questions due to messy working and not highlighting key information; their rushed approach left gaps when interpreting word problems.

Meanwhile, a primary student avoided written working for subtraction out of fear of mistakes, resulting in repeated confusion during practice sessions.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Bow Bowing recently noticed Leon, a high school student, now independently translates worded maths problems into equations and chooses the right methods without prompting—a big shift from when he'd hesitate on each step.

Another high schooler, Vasati, has begun tackling percentage and fraction conversions using a calculator confidently; she used to avoid these questions altogether.

For a younger student, reading aloud has improved noticeably—she used to guess at tricky words but now stops to sound them out and checks their meaning before moving on. Last week, she read an entire page unassisted.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Greg Percival Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Andrews Public School.
