Be encouraging and supportive, understanding that mistakes and errors are a part of the learning process. Additionally, tutors should encourage a lot of questions from the student. Tutors should also not generalise their teaching but rather tailor it to each student, and if possible make it enjoyable. Lastly, it is important to be on the same page…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is help build their confidence. A student is able to do anything, learn anything but only if they believe that they can do it or learn it. Being friendly, easy going, relaxed and flexible are key to giving a student confidence because without it, they aren't going to progress. I have learn't…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to inspire passion; a person who is sincerely interested in a subject and has a drive to continue delving into it will naturally go much further and achieve much higher then an unmotivated genius no matter the intellect as they will enjoy the entire journey of learning and not just focus on the results. I…

Results. It doesn’t matter if the class is funny (I think it’s better if you can do it in this way) if you don’t get results. Just adapt to each student to get the best of him. I'm able to empathize with the student and work together to find a…

The most important thing I find is simply patience. If I can help them clear their doubts no matter how many times it takes, I will be happy to do so. I also think a mind that is well prepared is suited for this job. Listening is also one powerful weapon. I can be patient and can create a comfort zone for them. My most powerful strength is that I…

Listen, and understand why they've been having difficulties in their study. Only then can the tutor truly be able to help the student get past these in order to make learning fun again. I'm a fast learner, excellent communicator and problem solver, and most of all, i take the time to listen in a calm and patient manner. I believe this last…

I think the most important things would include customizing the lessons to the student's pace and specific needs. Also, building confidence is essential to ensure that the student takes pride in the progress they made to gain the desire to learn more. I have a strong foundation in the subject matter which allows me to provide accurate and…

Communication and trust. Where one may be very knowledgable about the subject, if there is no communication, then there would be no point in tutoring if the student does not understand. Trust is also important because the student needs to trust the tutor and listen to them. In this vein, the tutor must also trust the student to focus and work…

A tutor can be a good role model for the student. So, I would ensure that I am always on time and help them understand mathematical concepts in a friendly way. If a student has any queries on certain concepts on the day before the exam, I would take the extra step to answer their queries via email/phone. I regularly watch tutorials in mathematics…

Many of my students are under in high stress situations, such as year 12 students trying to get a good enough result to get into university. They have a high workload. I believe that while grades are important, they are not always completely comprehensive of a student's ability in a subject. If the student is able to walk away from a session being able to understand the concept and feel interested and confident with it, they not only will gain better results in exams but will have a better idea of the subject as…

Inside Biggera WatersTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Sophie worked on time conversions, including interpreting time zones, and practiced applying ratios to real-world problems.

For Year 9, Riley focused on trigonometry basics—using sine, cosine, and tangent to solve right-angled triangle questions—and reviewed area and perimeter of composite shapes with guided examples.

Meanwhile, Suneha in Year 11 tackled advanced calculus concepts such as finding derivatives and applied these skills to sketching graphs of functions and identifying gradients.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student missed completing set algebra and ratios homework, which limited opportunities to reinforce multiplication and division skills—"he hasn't done the homework I gave on 10th."

In Year 10 trigonometry, another student skipped writing out equations, relying instead on mental calculations; this led to sign errors and lost marks.

A Year 11 learner struggled with time management in a practice test, leaving questions unfinished despite available minutes.

For a Year 7 geometry task, messy working and failure to show steps made it hard to catch mistakes during review, causing frustration when errors went undetected until correction time.

Recent Achievements

One Biggera Waters tutor observed a notable shift with a Year 10 student who used to stay quiet during sessions; now, he talks through his problem-solving steps out loud and asks for help when stuck, instead of just guessing.

A Year 12 student recently mastered analysing time series data—she's now able to interpret patterns independently after previously hesitating with this type of analysis.

In primary, one Year 5 learner initially struggled with basic time conversions but, after a few examples, began solving problems alone and even explained her reasoning as she worked through the questions herself.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Runaway Bay Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Biggera Waters State School.
