To me, tutoring is about helping students be able to confidently do difficult areas of academia, by themselves without the support of anyone else. A tutor unquestionably needs to adapt their ways of teaching to each individual student as everyone does learn in different ways. Personally, I believe essential skills of a tutor include: a passion to…

Tutoring is a similar thing to parenting. A tutor must cater to his/her student like a child of their own. So, the main thing a tutor can show towards a student is compassion. Next, the right attitude must be shown towards the students. Making them understand the concepts, even if it takes multiple times should be tolerated as the ultimate goal is…

The msot influential tutors that I have had have all been there for me beyond just amademically, but also as older people I can look to for advice on various things, and that is what I think a tutor needs to have as this also aids the teaching process because students are more likely to be involved if they enjoy the classes and have that…

It is important to help students to organize studies by preparing a timetable. Tutors should create awareness in students that why they are learning particular subject and importance of that subject so that they can concentrate better. I feel I can make students feel very comfortable with the subjects and encourage them to go beyond. I use the…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach the subject in their level of understanding and teach them the fundamentals. Sometimes it can be a challenge to explain some advanced theories especially to young minds but if we teach them to master the basics, then it would be easier for them to grasp future lessons. I…

The most important thing for a tutor is their ability to be patient and encouraging. Being knowledgeable alone isn't sufficient, as they should also have the personality traits to be a good teacher. Additionally, tutors need to cater their teaching to match the needs of each student to achieve the best outcomes possible. The tutor should maintain…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to go beyond what the student need, to go beyond just teaching and normally teaching content to the students. A tutor can listen to the student before giving advice or teaching. Listening is important as it allows a tutor to understand why the student may be having difficulties grasping subjects or topics and choose alternative strategies to help the student. Explaining a topic over and over again often doesn't work and a tutor needs to be open to hearing…

Always receive feedback from the student, ask the student if they are understanding and explain in their own words any concepts we learned at the end of the session. Inside BerwickTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Jasmine focused on rearranging algebraic equations and interpreting linear graphs, including identifying x- and y-intercepts to plot points.

For Year 4, Sam practised the 3 times tables and worked on adding fractions to make a whole, using hands-on activities with fraction cards.

In Year 9, Liam tackled trigonometric ratios by solving for unknown sides and angles in right-angled triangles using sine, cosine, and tangent, alongside forming equations from worded problems.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student hesitated to complete assigned homework on linear equations, which slowed progress in mastering new problem types—"Jaz really needs to be completing the couple of homework questions each week as this will help consolidate what we do in lessons."

In Year 11, one student struggled with test timing; running out of time meant unfinished responses on decimals and place value.

A Year 7 learner's written work was sometimes messy during BODMAS tasks, making it harder to spot calculation errors quickly.

In upper primary, one student avoided tackling harder worded questions alone, often waiting for prompts before starting.

Recent Achievements

One Berwick tutor noticed a big change in Chelsea (Year 10), who now sets out her work much more logically than last year—this has meant fewer mistakes and she can rearrange equations with barely any prompting.

In Year 9, Kayla showed real independence when she quickly picked up how to convert between mixed numerals and improper fractions, placing both types accurately on a number line without help.

Meanwhile, Emma in Year 4 managed to smash through her time test almost entirely on her own this week, needing hardly any support from the tutor.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Bunjil Place Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Margaret's Berwick Grammar.
