Giving confidence to the student is the most important thing. If the student is not confident in their ability to do the task, then they will believe that they can not and will not try. Understanding the frustrations that the student can have because they don't understand something, staying calm and patiently taking the student through the problem…

The most important thing a tutor can do would be to be patient enough to go over and over the topics until the student fully grasps all the concepts and not rushing through the topics. My strength would be to simplify and present matter in an interactive and easily understandable manner and make sure the students understand the finer concepts of…

I believe a tutor should be a role model for the students and encourage him/her on their academic journey. I have found that many times students don't have proper guidance in regards to academics, hence they develop this stigma that they are not smart enough. As a tutor my role is to encourage the students to not only do better in school but also…

The most important thing of a tutor in my opinion is to foster genuine passion for learning for the students. I believe that the academic success of any student should be self-paced, and the tutor could only help them if they face a too-challenging problem or cannot come up with a plan to achieve their success. Passion to help students, I…

Moreover, it helps the tutor become more approachable to the student. Other things that are quite important include: Not being afraid to admit that you need to look into…

A tutor can always assist a student to help understand all of their basic structural and systematic questions and problems. Also a tutor's guidance should inspire the student to work with dedication. The ability to understand a student and their learning style is something I highly value in a tutor. With one to one teaching a tutor can help a student on a deeper level than in a classroom setting, allowing them to feel they can ask about anything they're not sure on without any fear of the rest of the class judging them. In school, the subject teacher need to face a relatively large group of students, so their teaching style and pace of lesson are more inclined to fit the majority but not everyone. Therefore when it comes to private tuition, the tutor conducting one-to-one lesson can focus on the student himself and personalize the lesson in a way that this…

I think its understanding, confidence in knowledge and patience. We as tutors have to realise that not all students will understand ever single concept that they are taught the first time they are taught it. Therefore being understanding of everyone's situations, capabilities and then being able to find a unique way of teaching a student that…

Inside AlphingtonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Saxon revised indices, number lines, and the conversion of decimals and fractions to prepare for an upcoming test.

In Year 9, Ethan worked on structuring essays with a focus on crafting strong introductions and body paragraphs using relevant evidence from texts.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Nicholas practised analysing lyrics for his English oral presentation and refined his ability to identify key themes in "The Sapphires."

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student repeatedly struggled to connect algebraic rules with their purpose, often relying on memorisation instead of understanding—this led to confusion when teachers and peers offered differing methods.

As one tutor noted, "she was more comfortable repeating similar questions than unpacking why a method worked," which made worded problems especially challenging.

In VCE English, a senior student's essays lacked evidence and structure; attempts at analysis were undermined by summary-style writing and unclear topic sentences.

This meant promising ideas remained unsupported in assessments, affecting marks even when insight was present.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Alphington noticed that Nicholas, a high school student, has started using the TEEL essay structure more independently and now selects evidence to support his points without prompting—something he was hesitant about earlier in the term.

Taylah, also in high school, recently surprised her tutor by recalling key algebra techniques after a long break and smoothly solving new problems on her own, which marks a shift from needing step-by-step guidance last year.

Meanwhile, Aden (primary) took real pride in his maths progress and now volunteers to try challenging addition questions first, instead of waiting for help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fairfield Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Alphington Primary School.
