I think that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be understanding of the student and the student's circumstances and best adapt to the student's schedule and learning method. I think that the tutor must learn to adapt to how the student studies and learns and try to find the best method or technique that will help the…

Taking an empowering approach to instil confidence and a willingness to learn in a student is essential. Even if their grades don't improve, the most essential thing is to help develop their confidence and improve their attitude towards learning. If they are confident and interested in what they are learning, and feel positive about it, they are so much more likely to improve. Be able to read students and figure out a way to communicate to them in a way that works to them. You can’t treat every individual the same way and being able to identify that is imperative for effective tutoring. I’m very compassionate and sympathetic. I listen to a student to identify their needs/weaknesses to curate a tutoring method that…

I believe that while grades are important, they are not always completely comprehensive of a student's ability in a subject. If the student is able to walk away from a session being able to understand the concept and feel interested and confident with it, they not only will gain better results in exams but will have a better idea of the subject as…

Inside Willow ValeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 Milly focused on multiplying decimal numbers such as 0.3 x 0.05 and completed school homework involving decimals and fractions.

For Year 9, Jay tackled trigonometry by finding unknown side lengths and angles using angle of elevation and depression problems, with practice converting between degrees and DMS.

Meanwhile, Year 10 Sarah worked through exam revision covering logarithmic equations, index laws, area under graphs, and applications of the sine and cosine rules in complex questions.

Recent Challenges

Missing homework limited revision time; "she didn't complete her revision test, so we couldn't focus on the trickier questions together."

In Year 10, a lack of organized notes made it harder to review key formulas before an assessment—her papers were spread across several books and loose sheets.

Meanwhile, in Year 4, not mastering multiplication tables slowed progress with fractions.

For one anxious Year 11 learner returning after absences, forgotten worksheets led to stress during class activities.

These small gaps or habits meant extra time was spent searching for information instead of building new skills.

Recent Achievements

One Willow Vale tutor noticed a Year 9 student who previously rushed through her maths work is now slowing down to show every step in her working, making fewer errors and even checking answers before moving on.

In a recent session with a Year 11 student, the tutor observed him choosing to break down complex statistics questions using a new formula he'd struggled with last month—this time explaining his reasoning out loud without prompting.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who used to rely heavily on the calculator now insists on solving number problems by hand first and only double-checks if she's unsure.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Upper Coomera Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Pimpama State School.
