The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to promote confidence in their learning abilities. I have found that most students have no problems in actually learning the material itself, but rather have low self-esteem in themselves which negatively impacts their learning. Once you show them that they can do the work, it drastically improves their confidence not only in learning the subject material but also with other personal endeavours.
