What do I enjoy most about tutoring? 😁

I am captivated by the subjects I tutor, Mathematics and Biology. Working with students who tend to struggle at these subjects and often see them in a much more negative light was at first disheartening. However, over time tutoring has allowed me to share the excitement that can come with learning about these topics. Most importantly when I tutor well I can raise the confidence of students in subjects that they otherwise perceive as their weaknesses. Even when tutoring for the sake of extension I find so much joy in seeing the spark of passion for academic pursuits ignite in students.

My Strengths as Tutor πŸ’ͺ

When I learn new concepts, I delight in understanding them from multiple points of view. This gives a whole box of tools with which I can explain things to students who just need to see things from the right angle. I also know what it is like to really struggle at a subject and feel completely lost. When I tutor subjects I am strong in, I can empathize with struggling students, and tackle lessons in ways that avoid adding to anxiety to their learning, and guide them at their own pace, to understanding an entire subject.

Most important things I can do for a student πŸ…

I believe this varies with the student's age and the goal of tutoring. For younger high-school students, the most important thing is guiding them through the subject/s they find tricky, to develop academic confidence and inspire an intrinsically motivated learner. However, with senior high-school students seeking to maximize their ATAR or other focused goals, developing fluency in the subject is still very valuable, but providing scrutiny to their work, and unpacking resources beyond the normal scope of their class I think also becomes very important.
