What do I enjoy most about tutoring? 😁
I like to help children through difficult situations, such as having a lot of trouble grasping a concept. I like building a rapport with my students, figuring out their interests, and seeing how I can apply their interests to their learning.
My Strengths as Tutor 💪
I have a lot of sensitivity and empathy. When I was younger, I struggled with learning at times, especially reading, so I understand what does not come easy in learning, so I know how to teach it. Additionally, when a child struggles and becomes upset, I am understanding, and I can help with this area before continuing with learning.
Most important things I can do for a student 🏅
Having empathy, because not all content comes too easy for students as it does for us, obviously.
Having patience, because it can be frustrating if a tutor just expects a student to "get it" immediately.
Being kind. This seems obvious but you may be surprised the number of teachers I've had and met who are not kind, and they are extremely hard to learn from.

Hayden has been a great student! In this session he was ready to show me the work he needed to do for math and determined to learn.

I think he needs to be some more practice with short answer/essay questions for tests as this is high and marks and sort of a weak point for him. This was my last session so I will recommend that he uses the test prep materials teachers give him and practice writing out paragraphs relating to this material
Hayden seemed to understand algebra a bit easier this session

I think pointing out that many of his tests include a rubric/criteria section will help in the future, but it's important that Hayden remembers to go by the test's criteria in his answer. Anything extra should only be written if there's time.
Hayden catches on rather well in general and is willing to do repetitive work that maths sometimes requires.

We will further work on algebra, and there might be an issue with test anxiety. Hayden mentioned that when he starts a test, his mind goes blank. We will work on some test-taking techniques.

Hayden articulated that he was frustrated that when he goes into a test, he tends to forget baseline things despite preparing. This was really a breakthrough because previously, he had a difficult time really explaining what was difficult for him. I gave him some test-taking strategies.
On his science test, the issue was that he ran out of time. This just comes down to budgeting time well on tests, which is a really difficult skill to learn, but we will continue to work on this.
