What do I enjoy most about tutoring? 😁
I enjoy the "Ah-Ha!" moments. Finding ways to engage with and teach people based upon their specific contexts and modes of thinking or learning is particularly gratifying.
My Strengths as Tutor 💪
It's very important to me that students understand things fundamentally more so than simply in practice. Particularly in certain technical studies like math, chemistry, and physics, students can sometimes find themselves simply learning the mechanics of solution -- i.e. "I have to do these N steps when I see this X shape of problem" -- without really understanding why. Understanding these mechanics is also quite important and valuable, but lack of fundamental understanding ("why?") can come back to bite students further "down the line" when they need to extend or build upon prior subjects.
Most important things I can do for a student 🏅
It's the responsibility of a tutor to meet students where they are at. Tutors should come to learn the boundaries of what their students do and do not understand and create structure and context for pushing those boundaries to ultimately envelop the knowledge they need to succeed. This can sometimes mean "back-filling" missing knowledge or "re-learning" misunderstood topics.
In short, tutors are beholden to their students' current strengths and weaknesses and are responsible for fostering development in that context. Tutoring is not simply recitation of a prescribed set of knowledge.
