What do I enjoy most about tutoring? 😁
What I enjoy most about tutoring is that feeling of pride and accomplishment when I see improvements in my student's work (like a more structured practice essay, or just a faster completion time of a math problem), it's always good to know that I'm having a positive influence on their academics.
My Strengths as Tutor 💪
I think my greatest strength as a tutor is my teaching emphasis on understanding the processes behind certain questions, especially those in a mathematics context.
For example, an optimisation question worth 8 marks should take 8 minutes; with those 8 minutes being allocated towards understanding the question and thinking about the steps. I can make this 8 mark question take 4-5 minutes for my student by ensuring they understand the working out process, allowing them to "save time" in their assessments (and use it to achieve more marks elsewhere).
Most important things I can do for a student 🏅
100% Motivation and ensuring they feel like they have a support structure whose best interest is to see them succeed. Too many people in my year have lacked motivation to study effectively and as a result, their grades faltered. The school proceeded to threaten to kick them out of their ATAR classes, which only worked to further demoralise them (prompting many to drop out).
Can they be blamed? Their grades are falling and the school, instead of providing additional resources, threatens to kick them out of their classes? Witnessing this helped me understand the importance of motivation.

Sam recognised the key themes of the film, and attempted to translate these over into his work. I can tell he understands that when asked to write creatively from an inspiration, that his work must be like a thematical reflection of the inspiration
Sam didn't know how to format character-to-character dialogue in his work, an issue which I ironed out but will need to check again in the future to make sure he fully gets this. In addition, his work could be a bit more figurative.
Sam is quite adept at mentally rearranging shapes and clearly understands the spacial arrangement of these shapes, even if he doesn't recognise this (yet).

Sam confused his Surface Area and Volume equations, and totally forgot the ones relevant to circles and spheres. I advised that he do more practice problems to familiarise himself with the equations, as they're the money-makers in this area of maths.
Our work in the last 2 months is showing a lot more now; Sam is more able to identify key visual language techniques and explain what their effects are.

Sam knows what he's talking about, but his expression is still his "Achilles heel" - I'm still thinking it's a problem of confidence that he doesn't express himself more, but it is progressing steadily.

Sam has a sense for language techniques, even if he doesn't know what they are; he's aware of how sentence structure, word choice, and figurative language creates certain effects; he now knows what to name these techniques and can explain them in his essays.
Sam's problem is he doesn't have much confidence in himself, and it is because of this that he lacks motivation and energy. I reassured of what is going well and while he still doubts himself, soon enough he'll see his skills.
