What do I enjoy most about tutoring? 😁
- Seeing students grow in their understanding of subjects and helping students to reach their potential as a learner. It is an immensely rewarding experience to help students to reach that moment where they understand a concept or task and feel that they have reached a point where they can do it independently.
My Strengths as Tutor 💪
- Identifying students' strengths and areas where there is a need for further learning. As part of my teacher training, we were taught the immense value of incorporating students' interests into learning and why it is important to connect their learning to prior experiences in order to help them understand new concepts. I enjoy the challenge of being able to work out how to use their prior experiences to help scaffold their learning.
Most important things I can do for a student 🏅
- Listening and using constructive praise in a healthy manner (identifying specific strengths that a student demonstrates in a task and also identifying where they could improve.
- Identifying students' interests and experiences and using these to teach them.

Jack identified the importance of meiosis as well as the stages involved. He was also able to distinguish between meiosis and mitosis and identified its role in genetic variation.
Although we only covered the basics of meiosis today, Jack would benefit from constructing his own diagram of the process and remembering to label the key components present in each stage (spindles, centrosomes, etc.), as he had a little difficulty remembering some features of each stage.

Despite some technical difficulties, Alex was well prepared. Alex was able to identify how substances move across the cell membrane via active and passive transport.
We covered a lot of terminology that Alex may need to review, as she found some of the names quite tricky, including the different components of the plasma membrane, the names of the fluid inside and outside the cell, as well as the gradient that determines how substances move in and out of the cell. We can also aim to review this next week.

Hannah was able to identify what like terms were and how to use them to solve simple problems involving algebraic expressions. - Hannah had some difficulty with simplifying algebraic fractions and needed to recall that we can simplify fractions using the highest common factor and by cancelling like terms. Once Hannah was able to identify this, she found it much easier to complete the questions involving algebraic fractions.
- Hannah found multiplying fractions, including multiplying a fraction by a whole number challenging. Hannah needs to review her answer when doing problems involving fractions, and she would benefit from asking herself questions such as is the final number going to be larger or smaller (verbalising your working out), to assist her in answering the questions. - Hannah needs to be more careful when dealing with sums that involve negative and positive numbers, ensuring that she has identified the signs in the problem correctly, as this will help to reach the correct answer and will help her avoid any small errors in her working out. We can continue practising this in the next tutorial, but be sure to use the textbook as well. - Hannah found substituting values into an algebraic expression challenging, but I feel that she is improving. However, she would benefit from completing practice questions from her textbook.

- With some help, Hannah was able to answer some of the questions she had not completed during her exam and explained her working out. It's important to always have a go at working out what a question is asking and to then have a go at answering. Hannah was able to explain her working out on the questions we worked through, even though she required some prompting with some content.
- Working with algebraic expressions continues to be challenging for Hannah, and it would be beneficial for us to review this area in the future, as Algebra will be core component of Mathematics through Stage 5 & 6. I would recommend completing more practice questions from the textbook and always ask the teacher (or tutor) if you're not sure about a question, even if you'd rather do it outside of class.
