What do I enjoy most about tutoring? 😁

While I love tutoring for the opportunity to help a young person discover a new passion or watch as their confidence builds, my favourite part of tutoring has to be the moment when student finally understands a concept they have been struggling with. In music this may be finally getting the expression right in a certain phrase or finding a motion to conquer a more difficult passage, but this moment of watching something click as the student learns a difficult skill is part of tutoring of all kinds, from music to mathematics.

My Strengths as Tutor 💪

A strength I value in tutoring is my ability to formulate a concept in multiple different ways and through multiple different angles. If a student isn't grasping a concept, then continuing to explain it the same way isn't going to be helpful and a new way has to be found. For example, I was teaching a student last year who was struggling with rhythm in one of his pieces, it was approaching the exam date and he was getting frustrated and upset at his lack of progress. Shifting gears, putting down his instrument and singing the rhythm was what was necessary for him to achieve mastery.

Most important things I can do for a student 🏅

While the goals of every student are individual and varied, and any tutor should adjust their style accordingly, I believe there are a few things a tutor can do for any student. They can provide a space where a student feels safe and comfortable expressing themselves, inspire the student to feel confident in their skills and give the student any tools they may need to succeed in their tasks. If the student does not feel safe and confident, they may not have courage to ask questions about something they are unsure of or to take the risks that are inherent in any active learning.
