At school: has math exam in 2 weeks. Has to complete a cheat sheet (A4 2-sided). Did well on Science Test – 78%. English: did exam on fables and said it went “not bad”. • Said she feels about 3/5 in her confidence with writing skilled. • Encouraged her to do questions that she knows FOR SURE first and move on to the rest afterwards. • Used her skimming and scanning skills to find information quickly – this skill is improving. • Is prepared for her HASS exam – assigned additional study questions and she knows what she has to review. For tomorrow: bring concepts for focus (formulas, area, and perimeter were identified as areas that need improvement by her).
Often had to reread questions – am a little worried for her delegating time on her exam.

Adding Fractions • Was quite tired today – to be expected after a full day of Dance ? • Used revision packet. Rhianna chose to start with adding, subtracting, multiplying fractions. • Struggled at first to add fractions using LCM to find LCD. Did a few together and she did some on her own to practice. Recommend practicing them all to get familiar before Monday ? • Drew what the fractions would look like and how they have different numbers but represent the same thing – struggled to understand that 2/4+1/2 = 2/4+ 2/4 = 4?4 (1). Was stuck on there being one way to do something. Once we broke it down, she demonstrated some more understanding – I would love to see her be able to do this automatically without prompting. Combining Like Terms – did really well. Expanding Brackets – Did well. Factorising into Single Brackets • Opposite of expanding brackets (check answer by expanding brackets in head). • Forgot at first, but with practice, was really switched on to how to factorise ? • Caught on quickly and we moved on to next section (starred it so she can do a few more practice questions). Solving One-Step Equations • Would like to see her go a little quicker with these. She is good at the simper ones (e.g. g+7=10 [g=3]) but finds it more difficult to work with negatives/positives/fractions. Before Monday: • finish starred sections of Revision Packet (try to do it all) – Check the answers when you finish a section and correct. • Highlight sections on cheat sheet, so the sections can be found easier during test.
• Would like to see her get quicker at plugging in numbers when converting to equivalent fractions – she does know her times tables, but it takes her awhile to put the numbers in. Multiplying Fractions • Great at this but needs some prompting at times when simplifying. She questions herself when she does this and takes quite a while to come up with the final answer. Encouraged her to just try things and check back to see if they work. She can also just divide by a lower factor and divide again afterwards… • Remember: Whatever you divide/multiply the numerator by, you also do the denominator and vice versa!

Developing Comprehension – Thinking Critically • Did well understanding if the statements had negative or positive connotations. • Talked about what it is and also the meaning of “bias” o Gave examples and had a great discussion o Used speech writing as an example. • Wanted to read HOW? And WHY? Sections – volunteered ? • Pushed herself to read and understanding unfamiliar words. • Noticing that she is considering her answers and backing them up with factual explanations and she understands how to do this better and better with each time I see her. Great to see. • Made use of key words and paid careful attention to wording. • Needed some prompting during practice. • Did well thinking critically overall Reading • Rhianna did well reading and knew the key events of the plot.
• Reading was a little “bumpy” at times. • When we were distinguishing between statements that were fact and opinion, we both worked out which was which – it was quite a difficult activity that Rhianna took on and completed pretty well ? Harry Potter Chapter 2 • Answered question 3 and 4 verbally (of Chapter one questions). Rhianna struggled to answer each question without prompting.

Finished exam – so today will be a ‘picking up loose ends kind of day’ – Rhianna chose to work with fractions. To start off… Did mental maths questions: Whiteboard to solve as a last RESORT: How many seconds are in four minutes? Answered 240 seconds How many weeks are in one year? 365 or 366 How many days are in a leap year? 366 How many months are in a century? (took about 3 or 4 minutes to answer this one) – let her know how many years were in a century… 1200 (worked out by doing 12x100) • does well multiplying with multiple 0s Total of 11, 6 and 14? (Had to write the numbers down – struggled to do this mentally) 31 Area of a square that has a side 7 cm? 49 cm2 (knew that the square was 7 cm on each side [they are equal] and A=LxW Worked with Decimals and all its operations. • Did well with being introduced to all the different operations with decimals – struggled the most with multiplying decimals x decimals.
Product of 7 & 6 – Thought it meant addition at first 42 Perimeter of an equilateral triangle that has one side 25 mm? Needed a prompt – what’s an equilateral triangle? (answered that it was equal on all sides and had a lightbulb moment). 75 mm $14.70 + ______ = $20? Thought about it for quite a while - $9.30 – got 30 c correct but answer is $5.30… said she counted in her head wrong. $7.25+____ = $10? Gave prompt – how many cents would it take for you to get to the next dollar? Needed to use the whiteboard to work this out. Talked her through the rest…. You’re at 8, how much more do you need? $2.75 • Rhianna is not confident with her ability to add and subtract decimals… this may be something we should work on in future. 1/2 * ¾ = (Had to write down the question) – asked me if she had to multiply both the numerator and the denominator. 3/8
