Helping students understand their topics rather than having them "parrot learn" their topics is vital. A basic understanding of the various topics is vital as progression and improvement in results will be limited if this understanding is not occurring. If a student does not enjoy the subject you are tutoring, I see it as very important to help them find a way to enjoy the subject.
