For high school students, I find that the most important thing a tutor can do is to build a student's confidence in their own abilities. More often than not, I hear student's say that they don't know what they're doing, which can hold them back from trying their best. It's a fact of psychology that people tend to sabotage their own efforts when they're sure they will fail regardless.
