I don't think any question is too small or 'dumb' and I am always happy to try explaining things in a different way if it would be more helpful for the student. I believe the most important thing for a tutor is to be able to gauge the student's position and understanding of topics and to effectively be able to teach difficult concepts to them in a way that reduces their anxiety and helps them understand. Also making sure that they are comfortable and know that it is a safe space for them to ask questions about anything they are confused about.
